Harrogate, TN - Lincoln Memorial falls to the Newberry Wolves Saturday afternoon 12-14 on Senior Day. Five Seniors were honored for their contributions to the women's lacrosse program:
Sage Leax,
Josie Tinnerello,
Brooke Foster,
Emily Mirabile, and
Mary Kostus.
Newberry started out strong as they started out with a 4-goal run throughout the first eight minutes of the first quarter, but Lincoln Memorial cut that deficit in half by the end of the quarter. The first goal for LMU came with 2:02 remaining by
Josie Tinnerello, and the second came from
Ryan Smith with 1:25 remaining, making the score 2-4 going into the second.
Lincoln Memorial increased the momentum in quarter two, as Lincoln Memorial went on a scoring run of their own as they scored three back-to-back goals, beginning with Smith scoring off of
Briana Martinez with 14:14 remaining, followed by Tinnerello adding a goal 15 seconds later with Smith getting her first assist of the day. The Railsplitters got their first lead of the day with 13:11 remaining, thanks to
Naomi Spangler off of a Martinez assist with 13:11 remaining. The Wolves tied up the match with 4:49 remaining, but
Ruby Copeland gave the lead back to LMU with 4:08 remaining, with Tinnerello tallying the assist. Newberry added two more goals before the end of the half to give Newberry the lead going into halftime 6-7.
The first five minutes of the third quarter were quiet, but Lincoln Memorial got a goal on the board first as Tinnerello scored off of Smith with 10:18 remaining to tie up the match. Five minutes later, the Wolves scored two goals to get a two-goal lead, but LMU's Spangler decreased the deficit with an unassisted goal with 3:02 remaining. With Newberry recording one more goal before the end of the quarter, Lincoln Memorial goes into the final frame falling 8-10.
Newberry continued to extend the lead in the fourth as they added two more goals within the first four minutes, then Lincoln Memorial added a goal with 10:23 remaining as Tinnerello scored unassisted. After the Wolves scored two more goals by the 7:00 mark, the Railsplitters added three more goals in attempt to gain back the lead. The first goal was by Tinnerello with 7:22 remaining, assisted by Martinez, and the second goal was by Jaynes with 5:01 remaining, unassisted, and the third was by Jaynes with 3:19 remaining, assisted by Smith. The score at the end of the match was 12-14 with Newberry getting the victory.
Tinnerello led in points on the day with six for five goals and one assist, followed by Smith with five points for two goals and three assists. Martinez finished with three points for three assists, and Jaynes and Spangler each recorded two points for two goals. Copeland rounded out the points with one for one goal.
Tinnerello led in shots and shots on goal with 13 and eight, respectively. Jaynes, Leax, and Kostus were the team-leaders in ground balls with two each, and Smith led with four caused turnovers. Spangler led with seven draw controls, and
Emily Mirabile recorded 18 saves.
As a team, Lincoln Memorial took 34 shots, with 17 being on goal, 14 ground balls, 18Â saves, 11 successful clears, and 14 draw controls.
With the loss, Lincoln Memorial drops to 6-9 overall and 2-6 in conference play, and Newberry improves to 7-8 overall and 4-4 in the SAC.
The team's next match is on the road as they travel to Wingate, NC to face Wingate on Saturday, April 18
th at 4 pm.
