Harrogate, TN – Lincoln Memorial women's soccer falls to the Columbus State Cougars Saturday afternoon 3-2.
Lincoln Memorial was forced to be more defensive in the first half, as CSU took four shots in the first ten minutes of play, with
Emma Cooke saving three of them and one off target. In the 12
th minute, Columbus State's Mia Robinson scored to make the score 0-1.
The possession was more even for the next 10 minutes, with the team continuing to push defensively with saves by Cooke and team saves. In the 24
th minute,
Edie Wilds drew a foul in the penalty box to give Lincoln Memorial a chance to tie up the match.
Donna van der Zalm took the advantage and made the penalty kick to tie up the match 1-1.
There were no more shots taken by either team until the 40
th minute, where the Cougars took the lead with Juanita Escobar scoring, and the CSU extended their lead with another goal three minutes later by Kaylee Castano, leaving to score 1-3 going into halftime with Columbus State in the lead.
The Railsplitters went into the second half more composed, with van der Zalm securing the brace with her second goal of the game, off of a free kick by
Jade Brown, to make it a one goal game 2-3. LMU controlled the rest of the game offensively, as they outshot the Cougars throughout the remainder of the match 5-2, but were unable to capitalize on opportunities, giving Columbus State the 2-3 win.
Van der Zalm did all the scoring for LMU with two goals, with Brown tallying the lone assist.
Camden Prosser, van der Zalm, and Brown led the team in shots with two each. Cooke played all 90 minutes in goal, earning six saves.
Columbus State came out on top in shots (8-15), shots on goal (3-10), and corner kicks (2-10), but LMU recorded more saves (6-4).
With the loss, Lincoln Memorial moves to 0-1-1 overall.
The Railsplitters will continue non-conference play as they travel to Morrow, GA to face Clayton State on Thursday, September 3
rd at 3:00 pm.
