Greeneville, TN – Lincoln Memorial women's soccer takes down the Tusculum Pioneers in a high-scoring battle 5-4.
The Railsplitters came out strong, as they got the 1-0 lead in the 12
th minute, as
Ally Bevins sent the ball through the Pioneer backline to a running
Edie Wilds to score her first goal of the season.
Tusculum responded by tying the match back up ten minutes later in the 22
nd minute with a goal from Olsson.
Lincoln Memorial quickly gained back the lead in the 24
th minute, with
Edie Wilds passing the ball to Elizbeth Butler, who dribbles it around the goalkeeper to score LMU's second goal of the match.
Lincoln Memorial continued to stretch the lead as a deflection off a Railsplitter goes right in the path of
Paige Branam running at goal, who takes an initial shot that was blocked by the Pioneer goalkeeper, but takes the rebound and puts it in the back of the net to give Lincoln Memorial the 3-1 lead.
Tusculum didn't stop fighting, as Mackie reduced their deficit to one in the 43
rd minute, making the score 3-2 going into halftime with Lincoln Memorial remaining in the lead.
The Pioneers tie the match back up for the first time in the 22
nd minute, as Stone scored in the 53
rd minute, and gained the lead for the first time in the 56
th minute by Bookhamer.
Both teams continued to show a lot of fight as Lincoln Memorial evened up the match in the 59
th minute, as
Camden Prosser crossed the ball to
Edie Wilds to score her second goal of the match to make the score 4-4.
For the next 25 minutes, both teams battled to gain the lead, as Lincoln Memorial took nine shots and Tusculum took three.
The Railsplitters were finally able to capitalize on an opportunity in the 85
th minute, with Prosser receives a corner kick and crosses it to
Paige Branam, who gives LMU the lead 5-4.
LMU fought the last five minutes to keep the lead and to give Lincoln Memorial the 5-4 victory.
Edie Wilds led the team with two goals and one assist, followed by Branam with two goals and Butler with one goal. Prosser tallied two assists on the afternoon, and Bevins added one. Goalkeepers
Ari Frey and
Emma Cooke each played 45 minutes in goal, with Frey recording three saves and Cooke with two.
As a team, Lincoln Memorial outshot the Pioneers 25-24 (16-9 on goal) and topped Tusculum in corner kicks 12-2 but fell behind in saves (5-11).
With the win, Lincoln Memorial improves to 3-2-2 overall and 2-1 conference record, while Tusculum drops to 1-6 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
The team will return home on Saturday, September 26th as they host Wingate at 1:00 pm.
