Final round of State Farm Intercollegiate rained out; Railsplitters and Galyon capture tournament titles

TAZEWELL, Tenn. -- The Railsplitters were awarded their second-consecutive State Farm Intercollegiate title and fourth since the 2008 season as Tuesday's final round was rained out. Lincoln Memorial posted rounds of 278 and 288 on Monday at Woodlake Golf Club in Tazewell, Tenn. for a 36-hole total of 566 (-10), four strokes ahead of runner-up Carson-Newman.

Senior Braden Galyon (Powell, Tenn.) captured individual medalist distinctions with an opening-round, eight-under par 64 and a two-under par 70 in the afternoon flight. Galyon's 64 - carried by a six-under par 30 on the back nine which featured a rare double eagle on the par-5 17th - broke the Woodlake Golf Club scoring record of 65 previously head by LMU head coach Travis Muncy. His showing also matched the lowest round in program history, first etched by Connor Froning (Knoxville, Tenn.) in the opening 18 of the 2012 South Atlantic Conference Championship. Galyon warded off Tusculum's Brad Hawkins for the top individual spot as Hawkins fired rounds of 69 and 67 for an eight-under par total.

The Railsplitters topped Carson-Newman by only four strokes as the Eagles fired a seven-under par 281 in Monday's morning flight before spinning a one-over par 289 in the afternoon, finishing with a six-under 570. The Dalton State Roadrunners were just two strokes off of that pace with back-to-back under par rounds of 287 and 285 for a four-under total of 572. Tusculum (291+287=578) and Lenoir-Rhyne (294+297=591) rounded out the top five in fourth and fifth, respectively.

After Galyon, the Railsplitters were led by sophomore George Duncan (Dumbartonshire, Scotland) and senior Rand Wasson (Norris, Tenn.), who finished in a three-way tie for 11th place with 36-hole, even par totals of 144. Duncan shot 71 and 73, while Wasson posted a two-under par 70 and a two-over par 72 Monday. Junior Connor Froning was only two strokes behind that duo in a tie for 15th with a two-over total of 146. Froning carded back-to-back 73s. Sophomore Kurtis Campbell (Saint Lazare, Quebec) rounded out the A-Team's showing by earning a share of 23rd with rounds of 76 and 72.

Along with the A-Team, Lincoln Memorial had 19 additional players featured in the State Farm Intercollegiate with B, C and D teams and four individual competitors. The B-Team finished in sixth with 293+303=596, the D-Team was eighth with 302+298=600 and the C-Team was 11th with 301+306=607.

Senior Tre Mullins (Big Stone Gap, Va.) headlined that collection of players by tying for sixth to lead the B-Team with rounds of 69 and 73, finishing with a two-under par total of 142. Freshman Garrett Tucker (Tazewell, Tenn.) also posted a strong showing with an even-par total of 144. Tucker followed up an opening-round 73 with a one-under par 71. Seniors Austin Collins (Luttrell, Tenn.) and Luke Butler (Worcester, England), along with junior Richard Allen Hoskins (Tazewell, Tenn.) each placed among the top 20.

The State Farm Intercollegiate completes the Railsplitters' fall schedule as the A-Team will not return to action until February, but the B-Team is slated to travel to the Country Club in Morristown, Tenn. October 20-21 for the Walters State Fall Invitational.
