Railsplitters fall to 15th at Saint Leo Invitational

DADE CITY, Fla. -- The Railsplitters were unable to make a push in the final round of the Saint Leo Invitational, instead falling five spots down to 15th place with a 13-over par 301 on Tuesday at Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club. Lincoln Memorial opened with an even par 288, finishing with a 13-over par, two-day total of 589.

Eight of the 17 teams in the St. Leo Invitational field finished the 36-hole event under par. USC Aiken came from three shots back to capture the tournament title with a two-day total of 562 (-14). North Alabama and Lynn settled for a two-way tie for second with 10 under 566s. Two-time defending National Champions Barry claimed fourth place at eight-under par (568), while Nova Southeastern and Columbus State tied for fifth at seven under (569).

Of the 17 teams in contention in Dade City, 12 were ranked in the top 25 of the Division II Golf Coaches Association of America preseason national poll.

Junior Connor Froning (Knoxville, Tenn.) and senior Braden Galyon (Powell, Tenn.) paced the Railsplitters as that duo met in a 10-way tie for 27th place at even par for the tournament. Froning followed up his opening round, four-under par 68 with a four-over par 76 Tuesday. Galyon, meanwhile, fired a one-under par 71 to offset his 73 (+1) in the first round. Galyon's second round included a team-high five birdies to go along with two bogeys and a double bogey.

Junior Will Wright (Knoxville, Tenn.) turned in a one-over par 73 Monday, but he struggled through Tuesday's final round, carding a five-over par 77. Nearly all of Wright's damage was done on his opening nine holes as he fired an even par 36 on the front nine of the course.

Only one stroke separated sophomores George Duncan (Dumbartonshire, Scotland) and Kurtis Campbell (Saint Lazare, Quebec). Duncan finished tied for 76th with 74+78=152 (+8), while Campbell notched a share of 79th with 76+77=153 (+9).

Par-3 and par-5 scoring affected the Railsplitters' chances of competing for the St. Leo crown as they finished last in the field in both, averaging 3.30 strokes on par threes and 5.08 strokes on par fives. Lincoln Memorial finished fourth among all 17 teams in par-four scoring, averaging only 4.08 strokes per hole during the two-day stay.

The St. Leo Invitational was hosted at Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club's South Course, a 7,137 yard, par 72 located in Dade City, Fla.

The Railsplitters return to the course on Monday, September 29 in the opening round of the Tusculum Fall Classic, which will be hosted at Link Hills Country Club in Greeneville, Tenn.
