Railsplitters roll to fourth-straight Tusculum Fall Classic title

Lincoln Memorial wins its fifth-consecutive Tusculum Classic combined championship

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. -- The Railsplitters rolled in a four-under par 280 Tuesday in Greeneville, Tenn. to cap off their fourth-consecutive Tusculum Fall Classic title, completing the event with a nine under total of 559 at Link Hills Country Club. In coordination with the self-same women's tournament, Lincoln Memorial nabbed the program's fifth-consecutive Tusculum Classic combined championship.

The Railsplitters bested host Tusculum by four strokes to secure their fourth-straight Tusculum Classic title, tying the previous tournament record for most championships set by the Pioneers from 2006-09. SAC foes Lenoir-Rhyne and Mars Hill shared third-place distinctions with even par 568s, while Catawba finished fifth at eight-over par through 36 holes. Lincoln Memorial's B-Team fell to sixth place with rounds of 290 and 288, completing the event at 10-over par.

With two under par rounds in the Tusculum Classic, the Railsplitters have opened the fall portion of the 2014-15 campaign with an even par turn or better in four of their five rounds.

A day after posting a two-under par 69, sophomore Kurtis Campbell (Saint Lazare, Quebec) matched his previous career-low round with a four-under par 67 Tuesday. Campbell completed the 36 holes in a tie with Tusculum's Brad Hawkins for the top individual spot, but Hawkins claimed medalist honors via a playoff. Campbell's second-place run was his first top-five finish in the Blue and Gray.

Campbell's classmate, George Duncan (Dumbartonshire, Scotland), fell only two shots back of that mark, following up a three under 68 with a one under 70. Duncan wrapped up the Tusculum Classic in a four-way tie for third. Senior Rand Wasson (Norris, Tenn.) was also a part of that four-way logjam as the reigning South Atlantic Conference Player of the Year posted 70+68=138 (-4) to lead LMU's B-Team.

Juniors Will Wright (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Connor Froning (Knoxville, Tenn.) finished in sole possession of 15th and 16th, respectively. Wright posted back-to-back 71s to complete the event at even par, while Froning was one stroke off of that pace with 71+72=143 (+1). Seniors Braden Galyon (Powell, Tenn.) and Tre Mullins (Big Stone Gap, Va.) finished two strokes behind Froning to tie for 22nd. Galyon capped the A-Team's effort with 73+72=145 (+3), while the defending Tusculum classic champ Mullins carded 71+74=145 (+3) for the B-Team.

B-Teamer Richard Hoskins (Tazewell, Tenn.) was the biggest mover of the day as he posted 76+71=147 (+5) to earn a share of 28th place. Senior Luke Butler (Worcester, England) carded 74+75=149 (+7), while classmate Matt Chambers (Jacksboro, Tenn.) finished the event in 44th place with a two-day total of 157.

Freshman Scott MacGregor (Wakefield, England) competed in the event as an individual, turning in 78+76=154 (+12) to earn sole possession of 40th place.

In conjunction with the women's tournament, a combined Tusculum Fall Classic champion was crowned based on the cumulative scores of the five programs that entered both men's and women's teams to compete. Lincoln Memorial claimed its fifth-consecutive combined title with a two-day total of 1,163, 28 strokes better than runner-up Tusculum. The Lady Railsplitters finished second in the Tusculum Classic.

The Railsplitters return to the course on Monday, October 6, traveling to Sea Trail Golf Resort in Myrtle Beach, S.C. to co-host the Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate.
