WOMEN'S SOCCER CENTRAL: Newberry

HARROGATE, Tenn. -- Looking to snap a five-match South Atlantic Conference winless streak, the Lady Railsplitters (3-4-3, 1-3-2 SAC) welcome the Newberry Wolves (1-7-2, 1-5 SAC) to the LMU Soccer Complex for a 1 p.m. kickoff on Saturday.

Lincoln Memorial suffered its third straight SAC setback and missed out on its first league victory since September 16 on Wednesday when Carson-Newman handed the Lady Railsplitters a 3-0 loss in Harrogate. The Eagles took the lead on a sixth-minute goal and then added goals in the 54th and 66th minutes to pace the victory.

The Lady Railsplitters struggled to create any offensive opportunities in that match as they didn't tally their first shot on goal until the 57th minute and finished facing a 7-2 disparity in shots on goal.

It marked the third time the Lady Railsplitters have been shut out in six SAC matches, as their five total goals in league play is the fourth-lowest total in the conference.

The Lady Railsplitters fell into 10th place in the SAC standings with the loss on Wednesday, but fortunately the toughest stretch of the schedule is now safely in the rearview mirror. Having played six of the top seven teams in the current league standings already, four of Lincoln Memorial's last five SAC matches come against teams in the bottom half of the standings with a combined record of 9-29-2. They will need to make up ground over that favorable stretch as only the top eight seeds earn a bid to the SAC Championship.

Since opening SAC play with a 1-0 win at Brevard on September 16, the Lady Railsplitters have tied Queens and Tusculum, and lost to Lenoir-Rhyne, Wingate and Carson-Newman. Lincoln Memorial has not lost four consecutive SAC matches since the 2010 season.

The Lady Railsplitters will be looking for their first goal in a SAC match since the seventh minute of their match against Lenoir-Rhyne on September 26, ending a scoreless span of more than 260 minutes.

Newberry arrives at the LMU Soccer Complex on Saturday tied for last place in the SAC standings with a 1-7-2 overall mark and a 1-5 league record. The Wolves will be looking for their first win since September 23, when they defeated Coker by a final of 4-2. Since then, Newberry has lost to two of the SAC's elite teams in nationally-ranked Wingate and Anderson as well as Tusculum.

In Wednesday's match against Anderson, who is currently slotted second in the SAC standings with a 10-1 record, the Wolves hung right with the Trojans until giving up the game-winning score in the 86th minute. Newberry actually outshot Anderson in that contest 16-14.

Despite producing an average of just 11.5 shots per game, the Wolves have been respectable offensively by scoring 1.4 goals per match. The defensive side of the pitch is where Newberry has struggled the most, though, as they rank 10th in the SAC and 195th in the country with a 1.96 goals against average. They have served up at least two goals in seven of their 10 matches this season without a shutout on the ledger.

Senior striker Michelle Calmeyn and junior forward Erika Linch are responsible for 12 of Newberry's 14 goals this season. Calmeyn ranks among the top 10 in the South Atlantic Conference in goals (8) and points (18) while sitting just outside of the top 10 in 11th with 29 total shot attempts. Linch has produced four goals and an assist on 26 shots and a team-high 16 shots on goal. Guadalupe Magana and Sara Silverstro are responsible for the other two Newberry goals.

Senior Alexis Carrillo started at goalkeeper for the first eight games of the Wolves' season but sophomore Rebecca Darly has started the last two matches. Carrillo has a 1.81 goals against average with a SAC-leading 76 saves and a steady .835 save percentage in over 700 minutes of action. Darly is carrying a 2.50 goals against average with a .739 save percentage.

In 12 all-time meetings between Lincoln Memorial and Newberry, the two programs are nearly deadlocked with the Lady Railsplitters holding a slim 6-5-1 edge. LMU has won the last two match-ups, defeating the Wolves 2-1 in Harrogate in 2013 and 1-0 in Newberry in 2014. Michelle Hunter (Tecumseh, Ontario, Canada) scored the game winner in last season's contest, finishing off a pass from Kadie Soall (Tecumseh, Ontario, Canada) in the 26th minute. The Lady Railsplitters found a way to win despite being outshot 19-4 by the Wolves.
