Railsplitters slip to eighth in final Hargett Memorial Intercollegiate standings

MONROE, N.C. -- The Lincoln Memorial University men's golf team shot a 16-over par 304 in the final round of the 15th annual J. Ralph Hargett Memorial Intercollegiate on Tuesday, slipping to eighth place in the final standings. The Hargett Memorial was hosted, as always, by the Wingate Bulldogs at Monroe Country Club.

The Railsplitters were just six strokes out of first place and tied in sixth place after 36 holes, but carded their worst round since struggling through a 323 in the final round of last season's South Atlantic Conference Championship, stumbling back into eighth place with a 304. The Railsplitters finished with a three-round total of 899 (+35).

Tusculum captured the tournament title with rounds of 297, 297 and 291, tallying a total score of 885 (+21). The Pioneers held off Mars Hill (887), Wingate (888) and North Greenville (889), who finished in second, third and fourth, respectively. Brevard round out the top five in fifth place with a 30-over par total of 894.

Senior Braden Galyon (Powell, Tenn.) and sophomore George Duncan (Dumbartonshire, Scotland) both finished inside the top 12, but nobody else in the Railsplitters' rotation placed inside the top 30. Galyon fired a one-under par 71 to finish with a three-round total of 220 (+4) and in a tie for eighth place. Duncan posted 71+74+76=221 (+5) to earn a five-way share of 11th place.

Connor Froning (Knoxville, Tenn.) fell back into a tie for 33rd after struggling through a seven-over par 79 in Tuesday's round. Froning finished with 77+73+79=229 (+13). Kurtis Campbell (Saint Lazare, Quebec, Canada) failed to break 80 with a 10-over par 82 in Tuesday's spin, capping the tournament in a tie for 43rd with a 233 total. Rand Wasson (Norris, Tenn.) returned to action after being forced to withdraw from both of Monday's rounds due to sickness and shot a six-over par 78.

In the individual competition, Scott MacGregor (Wakefield, England) tied for 30th place with a 228 total, while Tre Mullins (Big Stone Gap, Va.) tied for 55th with a 237. MacGregor tied for the tournament lead in par-five scoring, notching a 4.42 (-7) average.

The Railsplitters head to Knoxville, Tenn. for the Tusculum/LMU Match Play on Saturday, March 28 before turning around two days later to host the Tennessee River Rumble at Tennessee National in Loudon, Tenn.
