HARROGATE, Tenn. – Elena Vasilyeva (Yaroslavl, Russia) continued her South Atlantic Conference dominance on Saturday, pushing her winning streak to 10 matches and her SAC record to 9-0 as the Lady Railsplitters (5-7, 3-6 SAC) fell by a final of 5-4 to the Newberry Wolves (15-6, 7-3 SAC) at the LMU Tennis Complex.
Lincoln Memorial's top tandem of Vasilyeva and
Gemma Goodland (Melbourne, Victoria, Australia) kicked off Saturday's showing in winning fashion as the duo knocked off Newberry's Vanessa Ortiz and Amanda Carrillo at the No. 1 doubles flight. Newberry would get the better of the Lady Railsplitters in the No. 2 and No. 3 flights, though, as
Angelica Solano (Bogota, Columbia) and
Summer Robinson (Midway, Tenn.) were set down 8-2, and
Priscilla Bulandres (Markham, Ontario, Canada) and
Roksolana Prudyvus (Lviv, Ukraine) were retired 8-3.
The Lady Railsplitters regained the led to begin singles play as Vasilyeva rolled over Elizabeth Williamson 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 1 flight, while Goodland collected LMU's third point with a decisive 6-3, 7-5 win over Ortiz at No. 2 singles.
Newberry evened the match a 3-3 following a win at No. 3 singles as Carrillo beat Bulandres 6-3, 6-1. Lincoln Memorial briefly recaptured the lead with a three-set win (6-0, 4-6, 6-3) by Prudyvus at No. 4 singles, but the Wolves tied it back up as Robinson fell 6-0, 6-2 to Rebeca Martinez.
Saturday's outcome between the Lady Railsplitters and Wolves came down to the sixth and final flight and that match fell in Newberry's favor by the slimmest of margins. Kelly McManus claimed the win for Newberry with a three-set victory (6-4, 3-6, 6-4) over Solano.
The Lady Railsplitters close out the LMU Tennis Complex on Tuesday, welcoming the Queens Royals to Harrogate for a 1:30 p.m. SAC bout.
