Quick Hits:
-The Railsplitters broke out of their mild offensive slump on Wednesday night in Wise, Virginia, scattering 19 hits with the second-most doubles (8) in program history to capture an 18-8 win over the Virginia-Wise Cavaliers. Seven different players had multiple hits in the contest, headlined by four hits apiece from
Logan Augustine (Urbandale, Iowa) and
Russell Clark (Wexford, Pa.). The offensive outburst was a welcome sight for the Railsplitters, who had scored just 16 combined runs in the five games leading up to Wednesday.
-
Ethan Elliott (Knoxville, Tenn.) has accomplished more in his first season with the Railsplitters than most pitchers have in their careers, and he will have a chance to reach another milestone this weekend. Elliott - winner of four-straight starts - can become the first LMU pitcher in 20 years to win 10 games in a season and move one win away from matching longtime Anaheim Angels reliever Scot Shields (1996) for the single-season program record for wins. Elliott, who is tied for the SAC-lead in wins and ranked seventh in ERA (3.48), is already just three wins away from moving into the top eight all-time for career wins at Lincoln Memorial.
-Prior to Saturday's doubleheader, the Railsplitters will celebrate Senior Day and honor the careers of
Jean Rodriguez (Caguas, Puerto Rico),
Zac Butler (Blue Springs, Ill.),
Danny Valdez (Orlando, Fla.),
Grant Painter (Knoxville, Tenn.),
Wes Todd (Franklin, Tenn.) and
Wes Neiderland (Thompson Station, Tenn.). First pitch on Saturday is set for 2 p.m., with the Senior Day festivities scheduled to commence shortly before that.
-Both Rodriguez and
Joe Stucky (Powell, Tenn.) enter the weekend riding team-high, six-game hitting streaks. Rodriguez is 8 for 22 at the plate over that stretch with seven RBI, two doubles and a home run, while Stucky is 9 for 23 with two RBI and three doubles. Stucky turned in his best performance of the season in that win at Virginia-Wise, logging the first three-hit game of his freshman season. Stucky has lifted his batting average from .218 to .269 during this recent surge.
-The Railsplitters have shredded right-handed pitching this season with a cumulative .324 average in 1,103 at-bats. Kalman and Augustine have been the best on the team against righties, as Kalman is hitting .400, while Augustine is hitting .393. Rodriguez hasn't been too shabby in that department, either, carrying a .358 clip against right-handed pitching. Â

Notes on the Tornados:
-Brevard arrives in Harrogate well out of the playoff picture and mired in an ice-cold stretch of baseball. Since winning three of four games from March 15-19, the Tornados have lost 14 of their last 17 games. Brevard was off last weekend, but played a pair of nonconference, home games earlier in the week against Belmont Abbey and Limestone. In that contest against Belmont Abbey, the Tornados served up 30 hits and five home runs in a 35-3 loss. Brevard most recently captured a 14-7 win at Young Harris on Wednesday.
-The Tornados' offense lacks any substantial punch, as Brevard is ranked eighth in the SAC in batting average (.302) and last in the league in on-base percentage (.368) and slugging percentage (.403). Brevard has the third-most hits in the league with 478, but that is more indicative of the sheer volume of games its played with 46. The Tornados have hit just 25 home runs this season while ranking last in extra-base hits with 108.
-Senior Ryan Smith and sophomore Christian Dix have fronted the Brevard offense this season. Smith is batting .377 with a team-leading 10 doubles to go along with 30 RBI. Dix is sporting a .348/.413/.386 slash line with three doubles, a home run and 19 RBI. Senior Hunter Donaldson has been the main run producer for the Tornados with a .288 average, seven doubles, six home runs and a team-best 36 RBI. Seniors Brennan Allen and Kyle Morrison are also sitting above the .300 mark. Allen is hitting .307 with 10 doubles and 20 RBI, while Morrison is carrying a .322 average with six doubles and three home runs.
-Brevard has had a tough go of it on the mound this season, ranking last in the SAC in earned run average (8.29) and batting average against (.349). The Brevard pitching staff has allowed at least 10 hits in all but nine of the team's 46 games. Expect to see junior left-hander Kyle Pittman take the mound in game one. Pittman is 1-3 this season with a 6.75 ERA and 18 strikeouts in 46 2/3 innings. Donaldson will also get the call in one of the three games, as he is 2-7 this season with a 7.57 ERA and 43 K's in 52 1/3 innings.
-The Tornados need two wins in the series to avoid being the first team to finish with less than six SAC victories since 2011. Coincidentally, Brevard was the last team to fail to reach the six-win mark when they finished 5-21 five seasons ago.
Â
Series History:
-Historically, the LMU-Brevard series has been dominated by the Railsplitters, who have won 21 of the 32 all-time meetings. But Brevard took two of three from Lincoln Memorial last season in Brevard, North Carolina, winning game two 3-2 and game three 7-5.
-The Railsplitters have actually fared much better on the road than at home in the series, compiling a 14-5 record outside of Harrogate as compared to a 7-6 mark at Lamar Hennon. The Railsplitters swept Brevard at home in 2014, which returned the favor from the Tornados' sweep in 2012.
