Box Score HARROGATE, Tenn. -- Senior
Wes Neiderland (Thompson Station, Tenn.) went 4 for 5 with a pair of triples to help the Railsplitters (28-19, 13-11 SAC) rack up 20 hits and defeat the Brevard Tornados (15-34, 5-19 SAC) 15-8 in the regular-season finale on Sunday afternoon at Lamar Hennon Field. The win gave Lincoln Memorial its first South Atlantic Conference series victory since mid-March and snapped a string of four straight series losses.
Â
By virtue of the win, the Railsplitters earn a share of fourth place in the final SAC standings. Lincoln Memorial will serve as the No. 4 seed for the upcoming South Atlantic Conference Championship due to its sweep of Newberry, which also finished tied for fourth place in the league after overcoming the Coker Cobras in 11 innings on Sunday. The difference between the fourth and fifth seed is huge, too, as the Railsplitters will avoid the single-elimination portion of the tournament that the five through eight seeds must endure and advance automatically to the double-elimination section.
Â
After combining for just five runs in Saturday's doubleheader split with Brevard, the Railsplitters scored in seven of their eight plate appearances and uncorked 20 hits against a SAC opponent for the first time since 2013, when they matched that mark at Brevard.
Â
In his final appearance at Lamar Hennon Field, Neiderland racked up four hits, drove in two runs and scored three times while also becoming only the fifth player in program history to triple twice in a game. It marked the second time Neiderland has accomplished that feat this season, as he had a pair of triples against King back on March 15.
Â
Mason Ewers (Kingsport, Tenn.) went 3 for 5 with three RBI, a double and a home run, which was his team-leading 11th of the season.
Logan Augustine (Urbandale, Iowa) chipped in three hits with a double, two RBI and walk, while
Jean Rodriguez (Caguas, Puerto Rico) went 3 for 5 with two RBI in his final game in Harrogate.
Eric Kalman (Brooklyn, N.Y.),
Russell Clark (Wexford, Pa.) and
Joe Stucky (Powell, Tenn.) had two hits apiece and combined for five RBI.
Â
Chase Randolph (Harriman, Tenn.) earned the win for the Railsplitters after providing four innings of lockdown relief, allowing just five hits without a run or a walk to improve to 2-2 on the season. Randolph struck out two in his second relief appearance of the series.
Matt Mullenbach (Urbandale, Iowa) made the start, but was pulled after allowing four hits and three runs over 3 2/3 innings of work.
Â
The Tornados put the first runs of the game on the board in the top of the second inning, when Pat Quinn dropped a two-out, two-run double down the right-field line. But the Railsplitters answered right back in the home half of that frame, as Clark singled in front of Ewers, who drove a two-run home run over the wall in left centerfield to even the score at 2-2.
Â
The Railsplitters couldn't muster any more runs in that inning after stranding the bases loaded, but they began to pour it on in the bottom of the third, when Ewers plated a run with a double off of the top of the wall in left field and Stucky scored two with a single.
Â
Mullenbach retired two of the first three batters he faced in the top of the fourth, but walked three straight to allow the Tornados to cut the deficit to 5-3, effectively ending his day. But Randolph came in from the bullpen and wiggled out of that jam by forcing Brennan Allen to ground out.
Â
The Railsplitters erased that run in the bottom of the fourth on Clark's sacrifice flyout and then tacked on three more runs in the fifth frame. Augustine, Kalman and Neiderland recorded run-scoring hits in that inning, which increased the Railsplitters' lead to 9-3.
Â
While already sporting an 11-3 lead, the Railsplitters scrounged up four more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Rodriguez,
HD Dillard (Woodstock, Ga.) and Augustine drove in runs that frame, while Neiderland put the final run on the board with a sacrifice flyout.
Â
The Tornados cut a chunk off of Lincoln Memorial's lead in the ninth by scoring five runs, highlighted by a string of four straight run-scoring hits, but the deficit was too great to overcome, as the Railsplitters clinched the series with a 15-8 win.
Â
Jay Phillips was stuck with the loss for the Tornados after serving up 11 hits and nine runs over 4 2/3 innings of work. Schuyler Martire led Brevard at the plate by going 3 for 5 with an RBI and a double, while Allen, Kody Spencer, Christian Dix and Quinn had two hits apiece.
Â
The Railsplitters will open the 2016 South Atlantic Conference Championship against three-seeded Tusculum at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 29 at Smokies Park in Kodak, Tennessee.
