Comeback falls short in Lady Railsplitters' 56-52 loss at Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The No. 5/8 Lady Railsplitters trimmed a 15 point Newberry lead down to three but were unable to overcome the deficit as they fell 56-52 to the Wolves Saturday afternoon.

LMU falls to 21-2 on the season and 16-2 in the South Atlantic Conference.

Megan Pittman (Liberty, Ky.) led LMU with 15 points, 11 of them coming in the fourth quarter. She also surpassed the 1,000 point mark for her career. Shea Coker (Knoxville, Tenn.) was the only other Lady Railsplitter in double figures as she scored 13 points.

For the game, LMU shot 19-of-58 (32.8%) from the field, 2-of-17 (11.8%) from three-point range and 12-of-19 (63-2%) from the free throw line.

Newberry went 33.3% from the field, 30.8% (including eight treys) from behind the arc and 70.0% from the free throw line.

For only the third time this season, LMU was out-rebounded in a game as Newberry held a 41-34 advantage in that statistic.

Newberry led the entire contest, starting off with a three-pointer and going out to a 14-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The cold shooting for LMU continued in the second quarter as the Wolves used an 8-3 run mid-way through the quarter to pull out to a 26-12 lead. The score at the half was 30-16.

The Wolves extended the lead to 43-23 with 2:34 left in the third before LMU made a small run to cut it to 45-31 going into the fourth quarter.

Pittman came out and scored seven quick points to cut the lead to 47-38, but the Wolves hit back-to-back three-pointers to extend it back to 15 with six minutes left. LMU then rallied for a 14-2 run to cut the lead to 55-52 with 1:13 remaining. After a Newberry missed three-pointer with 21 seconds remaining, LMU got the rebound and Coach Krystal Evans called timeout to advance the ball. On the ensuing play, Coker's game-tying three pointer missed and LMU was forced to foul. Newberry hit one of two free throws and held on for the 56-52 win.

LMU will travel to face Mars Hill Wednesday evening. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
