Quick Hits:
- Lincoln Memorial swept both ends of a doubleheader Tuesday against Kentucky State to close out a 4-1 home stand. The Railsplitters scored four unanswered runs in the first game to overcome a 4-1 deficit and walked off in the bottom of the seventh on
AJ Weed's (Hendersonville, Tenn.) single. The second game was not as tightly contested as the Railsplitters used an eight-run second inning to coast to a 14-2 victory.
-
Mason Ewers (Kingsport, Tenn.) completed a 10-for-18 home stand with a 4-for-6 afternoon and drove in three more runs to increase his team-leading total to 15. He recorded exactly two hits in each of the five games played at Lamar Hennon Field and drove in nine runs. He also leads the team in average (.417), hits (20), doubles (5) and stolen bases (5). He has reached base in all 13 games this season and is on a 12-game hit streak since going hitless in the season opener.
-
Logan Augustine (Urbandale, Iowa) launched a pair of home runs in the 14-2 win. He finished the home stand 5-for-14 with six walks, nine runs scored, the two home runs and three RBI. Augustine has also reached base safely at least once in all 13 games.
-
Muta Crusoe (Bellwood, Ill.) went 3-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and RBI in his first start in the field of the season in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader. The three doubles tie a program record that was last accomplished by Scott Miller at Brevard on March 22, 2013.
- Lincoln Memorial scored in the first inning for the eighth time this season in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader. Despite outscoring opponents 16-5 in the first inning thus far, the Railsplitters improved to just 2-6 in games they have scored in the first.
-
Nate Stinson (Jonesboro, Ga.) has been an early catalyst for the Railsplitters, batting 5-for-9 (all singles) with a walk and hit by pitch to lead off games. He has also scored five first-inning runs. In all other at bats the freshman is 6-for-38 with a team-high 17 strikeouts.
-
Ethan Elliott (Knoxville, Tenn.) finally received some run support behind him and shut down Ohio Valley Saturday with just two runs and three hits allowed in six innings of work. He also struck out nine on his way to his first win of the season. In three starts he is 1-2 with a 3.31 ERA and 19 strikeouts in 16.1 innings.
-
Dominic Morabito (Vienna, Va.) and
Cody Hinson (Taylor Ridge. Ill.) each picked up a win in relief on the home stand. Morabito allowed a single hit and struck out seven Fighting Scots over 3.2 scoreless innings in Sunday's 7-3 comeback win. Since a rocky first outing at USC Aiken, Morabito has not allowed a run in 5.2 innings over three appearances to drop his ERA to 2.25. Meanwhile, Hinson allowed two runs in eight innings over two appearances. He was hit with the loss in the second game of Sunday's doubleheader against Ohio Valley after surrendering the go-ahead run—his only blemish in 3.1 innings of work. He rebounded Tuesday to allow a solo home run in 4.2 innings as the Railsplitters came back against Kentucky State.
Notes on the Tornados:
- Brevard dropped two of its three matchups in Cary, N.C. Saturday and Sunday against future Division III USA South foe Williams Peace.
- Senior infielder Schuyler Martire leads a group of four regular Tornado starters batting over .350. Martire leads the team in batting average (.400), runs scored (13) and is tied in hits (18). The leadoff hitter also is second on the team with three stolen bases.
- Blaine Durham is tied with Martire for the team lead in hits and is right behind in batting average at .391. He has recorded a hit in 10 of 12 games. He is one of three Brevard players to hit a home run.
- First baseman Kyle Morrison is batting .386 with one fewer hit than Martire and Morrison but has connected on two of Brevard's four home runs. He is tied with Donny Carsillo for the team lead at 10 RBI and has reached base safely in 11 of 12 games.
- Catcher Brayden Morris is the other player batting above .350 at .351. No other Brevard regular is batting above .300. He is tied with Durham with one home run.
- Freshman Kristofer Yarbrough has emerged as a relief ace with a 0.66 ERA in 13.2 innings across eight appearances. His record sits at 2-0, and opponents are hitting just .133 off the righty.
- Senior Teke Scudder missed the entire 2016 season but has been Brevard's best starting pitcher through three starts. He has improved in each start and most recently tossed six shutout innings at Williams Peace to earn his first win. For the season he is 1-0 with a 3.68 ERA and 11 strikeouts in 14.2 innings pitched.
- All other Brevard starting pitchers have combined to go 0-6 with an 11.53 ERA. Only one starter besides Scudder, Tyler Konzen, has pitched past the fourth inning (six innings at Shorter February 12). Scudder has made two such starts.
- Opponents have outscored the Tornados 52-30 through the first four innings of games. Brevard has rebounded to outscore opponents 37-23 across the next three frames but have been shut out 6-0 in the eighth and ninth innings.
Series History:
- The Railsplitters are 23-12 all-time against Brevard, including a 14-9 record in conference games. They have played particularly well in Brevard to the tune of a 14-5 mark.
- Lincoln Memorial took two of three matchups in Harrogate in 2016 to conclude the regular season. The team dropped the series opener 4-3 but rebounded to win the next two by scores of 2-1 and 15-8. Elliott limited Brevard to just one run with five strikeouts in a seven-inning complete game in the 2-1 victory. In the process, he improved to 10-1 on the season and become just the second LMU pitcher to reach 10 wins in a season and first since Scot Shields won a program-record 11 games in 1996.
- The Tornados took two of three matchups the last time the teams met in Brevard in 2015.
