Quick Hits:
Â
- Lincoln Memorial took two of three matchups at Brevard to open SAC play. The Railsplitters fell 14-11 in the Friday's series opener courtesy of five errors and eight unearned runs. The team rebounded to sweep the next day's doubleheader by scores of 4-1 and 17-4. In the front end, Lincoln Memorial trailed 1-0 through six innings before rallying for four late runs. Brevard led early in the second game as well, but the Railsplitters scored 15 unanswered runs over the final four innings.
Â
-
Logan Augustine (Urbandale, Iowa) enjoyed a big weekend for the Railsplitters, going 5-for-12 with a pair of home runs, nine RBI and five walks. He was a single shy of hitting for the cycle in Friday's 3-for-4 effort with four RBI and added another home run and five more RBI in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader. He is also the only Railsplitter to reach base safely in all 16 games. For the season, Augustine has connected on five of the team's 12 home runs and also leads in RBI (20), runs scored (21) and extra base hits (11).
Â
-
Mason Ewers (Kingsport, Tenn.) had a quiet 2-for-12 weekend at the plate. He went hitless in both ends of Saturday's doubleheader to snap a 13-game hit streak. Despite the down weekend, he still leads all Railsplitters in average (.367), hits (22) and stolen bases (6).
Â
-
Timmy Wages (Molin, Ill.) went 3-for-9 in three games against Brevard with four walks to extend his on-base streak to 11 games. He leads the team with a .530 on base percentage and has reached base in 15 of 16 games. His seven hit-by-pitches are also the most on the team, and he is tied with Augustine in walks (14) and Ewers for second in RBI (17).
Â
-
Nate Stinson (Jonesboro, Ga.) has been an early catalyst for the Railsplitters, batting 5-for-9 (all singles) with a walk and hit by pitch to lead off games. He has also scored five first-inning runs. In all other at bats the freshman is 6-for-38 with a team-high 17 strikeouts.
Â
-
Muta Crusoe (Bellwood, Ill.) replaced the slumping Stinson in the Lincoln Memorial's starting lineup in the second game of a doubleheader against Kentucky State and went 3-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and RBI. In four games since taking over a starting role, the outfielder is 7-for-16 with four doubles, five RBI, one home run and a stolen base.
Â
- Lincoln Memorial scored in the first inning twice in the Brevard series and has done so in 10 of 16 games. Despite outscoring opponents 19-12 in the first inning thus far, the Railsplitters are just 3-7 in games they have scored in the first.
Â
-
Ethan Elliott (Knoxville, Tenn.) didn't have his best stuff Friday at Brevard, allowing nine hits and seven runs (four earned) in five-plus innings. He also struck out a career-low one batter. In four starts the lefty is 1-2 with a 4.22 ERA and 21 strikeouts in 20.1 innings.
Â
-
Dominic Morabito (Vienna, Va.) allowed three unearned runs and took the loss Friday at Brevard but rebounded the next day with 5.1 shutout innings in relief to earn the win. Since allowing two earned runs in his season debut at USC Aiken, the righty has not allowed an earned run in 11 innings with 14 strikeouts spanning five appearances to drop his ERA to 1.35.
Â
Notes on the Cobras:
Â
- Coker won Friday's series opener at Tusculum 10-6. It followed with a 5-3 victory in the front end of Saturday's doubleheader. Tusculum got one win back in the series finale with a 3-0, two-hit shutout.
Â
- The Cobras used a six-run fourth inning to take the lead over the Pioneers in Friday's series opener. Three Cobras recorded multiple hits and RBI. Clint Allen homered to lead the way with a 2-for-4, three RBI performance. Thomas Lopez and Jon Koski added a pair of doubles and RBI apiece. Starting pitcher Darius Coldiron allowed 10 hits and four earned runs in six innings but improved to 4-1 on the year.
Â
- In the second game, Forrest Arnold shut down the Pioneer offense with just four hits and one earned run over seven innings. Griffin Hollifield finished the final two innings to earn his fourth save of the year. Coldiron's two-run single in the fourth inning put the Cobras ahead, and the team added three more runs in the eighth. Hollified came on for a bases loaded, no-out jam in the bottom of the eighth and allowed two inherited runners to score but pitched a scoreless ninth to seal the win.
Â
- Will Sutton was outdueled by Tusculum's Tim Hardy in the series finale. Sutton allowed three runs (two earned) over six innings, but Hardy only allowed two singles and a walk in a complete game, seven-inning shutout. Coldiron was the only Cobra to reach base twice—he singled and walked. The rest of the team combined to go 1-for-22.
Â
- Coker's offense woke up in a big way Tuesday in its 22-5 win at Barton, who entered the game ranked fifth in the Southeast region. The Cobras used a 10-run second inning to jump ahead 13-0 after three frames. Eight Coker batters recorded multiple hits, and four drove in at least three runs apiece. Lopez went 4-for-5 with three RBI, and AJ Strnad drove in a team-high five runs.
Â
- Strnad and Lopez lead the team in most offensive categories. Strnad's 19 hits and eight extra base hits lead all Cobra batters, as do his 17 strikeouts. Lopez has two fewer hits, but his .436 average and .536 on base percentage are easily the highest on the team. Both have connected for two home runs apiece for four of the team's five total.
Â
- Strnad is in a three-way tie for the team lead in RBI at 12. Koski and Bryson Conner also share that mark.
Â
- Coker's batters have struck out 137 times in 15 games for an average of over nine per game. Opposing pitchers have struck out Cobra batters at a clip of 10.0 per nine innings. The offense has struck out at least five times in every game and has eclipsed double digits in strikeouts six times, including a season-high 20 at Erskine Feb. 18.
Â
- Coker's regular starting pitchers are comprised of a trio of seniors. The group has combined to start 11 of the Cobras' 15 games, going 6-2 with a 3.95 ERA. Coldiron has been the most consistent of the bunch with a 4.01 ERA and 20 strikeouts in 24.2 innings. He has worked at into the sixth inning in each of his four starts but has allowed more hits than innings pitched in each start, including 12 and 10 in his last two outings. Will Sutton has thrown back-to-back complete games but took the hard-luck loss Saturday at Tusculum to fall to 2-1 on the year. He has a 4.37 ERA over 22.2 innings but only has 12 strikeouts compared to nine walks. Forrest Arnold has allowed just three earned runs in 14 innings over his last two starts. He was knocked around in two relief appearances early in the season, so his ERA sits at 5.48.
