HARROGATE, Tenn. – LMU's new Indoor Tennis Facility will probably be the busiest place on campus this weekend as five teams, including LMU, will play there from Thursday to Saturday. The busy weekend kicks off with a women's tennis match Thursday afternoon against East Tennessee State University.
Friday sees Cumberland University face Union College at 2 p.m. Cumberland then plays twice on Saturday, taking on LMU Saturday morning at 8 a.m. followed by a match matches against King University at 1 p.m. The final day sees LMU host Union at 1:30 p.m.
LMU's women will enter the match against the Buccaneers with a 3-1 record on the season, with the lone loss coming last Sunday to Bellarmine by a 6-3 margin with four of Bellarmine's points coming off of tiebreakers. In singles, LMU is led by
Julia Loos and
Julia Valls, who are both undefeated.
Marta Pinol,
Angelica Solano and
Julia Zellner each have 3-1 records. In doubles play, Solano/Valls and Delisse/Loos each are 2-2 on the year while
Kristin Vogel and
Kiersten Waugh have a 2-0 record.
Thursday will mark the first time that ETSU has played LMU in women's tennis and they will be the first Division I team to play on the LMU campus since April, 1992, when softball hosted Tennessee Tech on the Dorothy Neely Field. The Bucs are currently 1-3 on the season and most recently defeated Tusculum College 4-3 on Feb. 3. Thursday's match will be played by Division I rules, in which the doubles are counted in a "best of three" format and only count for one total match point.
LMU's men are currently undefeated on the season and have four players (
Constantin Ernstberger,
Moritz Hoerner,
Joshua Peress and
David Segarra) who all have 3-0 records in singles play. Peress and Segarra have combined for a 3-0 record in doubles, while Marti and
Iker Tomas Moure are 2-0.
Cumberland will be facing LMU for the first time in many years on Saturday. Friday's match against Union will be the season opener for both the Phoenix men and women. Last year CU's women were 4-9 and the men went 7-6.
Union's women are 1-0 on the season after defeating Mars Hill 9-0 on Sept. 30. The men are also 1-0 after defeating Mars Hill 8-1.
King, who will face LMU in Bristol on March 26, comes into the weekend with the women having an 0-4 record while the Tornado men are 1-2 on the year.
This weekend's multi-school matches are the first of many that LMU Indoor Facility will host. On Feb. 24 Martin Methodist College will play both LMU and Carson-Newman in a "tri-match".
