Railsplitters kept quiet in sweep at Newberry

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Newberry Wolves (13-13, 6-6 SAC) snapped a nine-game losing streak to Lincoln Memorial (17-9, 5-7 SAC) to sweep Saturday's doubleheader 11-1 and 2-0.

After losing 3-2 Friday, the Wolves pounded out 11 runs on 14 hits in the opening game. Newberry's pitching continued to stymie LMU in the seven-inning rubber match as the Railsplitters were shut out for the first time this season.

Lincoln Memorial's four runs is its lowest total ever in a three-game South Atlantic Conference series.

The Railsplitters play their next 11 games at Lamar Hennon Field beginning Tuesday at 2:30 against Erskine.

Game One: Newberry 11, Lincoln Memorial 1

Newberry scored early and often to down Lincoln Memorial 11-1 and tie the series. The Wolves also outhit LMU 14-5 to win their first game over the Railsplitters in 10 tries.

Derek Olenchuk finished 3-for-5 and scored a pair of runs. Ben Herring, Tyler White, Chase Barbary and Colin Santiago each collected two hits. Santiago drove in four runs while Barbary and Danton Hyman plated two apiece.

The Wolves batted .500 (7-for-14) with runners in scoring position.

Dylan Southerland improved to 4-1 by holding the Railsplitters scoreless over six innings. The righty held LMU to two singles—by Henry More and Timmy Wages—and walked four. He also hit two batters and struck out five.

Newberry scored in each of the first four innings to take a 10-0 lead.

White's single in the bottom of the first kicked off the scoring. Hyman singled in two more in the second. Two more runs in the third on a groundout and single ended LMU starter Joe Bobiak's day.

Bobiak had his shortest outing of the year at 2.2 innings and allowed five runs—all earned. He also allowed seven hits and two walks and struck out two. The lefty was tagged with his first loss of the year to fall to 5-1.

The Wolves added five runs in the bottom of the fourth. Santiago did most of the damage with a bases-clearing double. A sac fly and RBI single brought in the other runs. Another RBI single in the sixth made the score 11-0.

Lincoln Memorial scored its only run in the top of the eighth. Triston Campbell singled and Peyton Sawyer doubled with two outs to put runners on second and third. A passed ball then allowed Campbell to score.

Tyler Adams was held off the base paths for the first time this season to snap his 27-game on-base streak and 14-game hitting streak.

Game Two: Newberry 2, Lincoln Memorial 0

Newberry pitching again shut down the Railsplitters in the seven-inning nightcap as the Wolves swept the doubleheader to win the series. The Railsplitters were held to just four hits as the team was shut out for the first time in 2018. Mason Ewers had a double while Logan Augustine, Tyler Adams and Will Reddick singled.

Ryan Harbin needed just 90 pitches for his complete game shutout. The lefty walked two and struck out three to improve to 3-1.

Newberry was held to just three hits—two of which put the Wolves ahead 1-0 in the third. Hyman singled and stole second with two outs and came around to score on Allman's ensuing single.

That would stand as the only hit of the game for either team with runners on base. The Wolves finished 1-for-11 while LMU was hitless at 0-for-9.

Dominic Morabito only allowed two runs—one earned—in five innings but was dealt the loss to fall to 1-3. The righty struck out four but walked a career-most six batters. Chase Randolph pitched a scoreless bottom of the sixth in relief.

Newberry plated its only other run in the fifth without the benefit of a hit. Two walks and a failed pickoff attempt led to runners on second and third. A passed ball four allowed the runner on third to score.
