Sunday SAC doubleheader against Newberry on tap for Lady Railsplitters

HARROGATE, Tenn. – The Lady Railsplitters return to Dorothy Neely Field on Sunday to host Newberry for a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.  
 
Lincoln Memorial (20-16, 3-7 SAC) split a doubleheader at Anderson on Wednesday to conclude a six-game road trip. The Lady Railsplitters dropped game one 4-3 to lose their seventh consecutive game but rebounded with a 4-2 win in the nightcap. Newberry (24-14, 5-5 SAC) has split its last two conference doubleheaders, most recently losing game one 5-2 and winning game two 5-3 against Catawba on Tuesday.

Quick Hits:
 
- Anderson hit a pair of early home runs and held off a late rally to defeat the Lady Railsplitters 4-3 in game one on Wednesday. Lincoln Memorial only accounted for five hits in the contest. Elise Bruce reached base in all three plate appearances with two singles, a walk and an RBI. Kelsie Hocutt and Bella Buccellato also drove in runs in the loss.
 
- A solid outing from Brianna Taylor and homers by Emma Webb and Audrey Petoskey led the Lady Railsplitters in their 4-2 win in game two at Anderson, which snapped the program's longest losing streak since 2009. Allie Jones also went 2-for-4 with a double. 
 
- The Lady Railsplitters are currently tied for ninth place in the SAC standings but they have already played the league's top four teams, Lenoir-Rhyne, Queens, Anderson and Catawba. Lincoln Memorial can make up a lot of ground with doubleheaders against Mars Hill (3-7), Wingate (3-7) and Tusculum (4-6) remaining on the docket.
 
- The LMU pitching staff has struggled against SAC opponents, ranking last in the league in batting average against in conference play with a .374 mark and second from the bottom in earned run average at 5.94. The team has allowed at least seven runs in seven of 10 SAC games. 
 
- Hocutt, currently riding a six-game hitting streak, leads the team with 15 hits, seven RBI and a .417 batting average in SAC play. Ty-Kella Goins has also been solid against SAC opponents with a .379 average, 11 hits and nine runs scored. Webb is batting .333 in conference play with 11 hits, six RBI and six walks, and has reached base in seven straight games. 
 
- The Lady Railsplitters are 7-5 at Dorothy Neely Field compared to 5-8 on the road. The team hits .311 and averages 6.66 runs per game at home, standing in stark contrast to its .260 mark and 4.0 runs per game on the road.
 
- Lincoln Memorial is putting its leadoff hitter on base nearly 50 percent of the time (.449) but the offense has not been consistently producing in some key situations. The Lady Railsplitters are hitting .288 with runners in scoring position, .295 with runners on base and .282 with the bases loaded. 
 
Know the Opponent: 
 
- Newberry was limited to five hits while Catawba piled up 12 to win game one on Tuesday 5-2. Natalie Willis paced the Wolves with a 2-for-3 day that included a triple. Myranda Dills reached twice with a double, a walk and a run scored. Emily Marchbanks took the loss to fall to 10-3 on the season after allowing all 12 hits and five runs while striking out six over 7.0 innings. 
 
- The Wolves responded in game two, racking up 10 hits to earn the split vs. Catawba with a 5-3 triumph. Haley Wildes went 3-for-3 with an RB and a run scored, Daphne Peyton went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a solo homer and Paige Meyer also added two hits with an RBI. Alyssa Ball went the distance, surrendering just six hits and three runs with a walk and a strikeout in seven innings. 
 
- Newberry ranks second in the SAC in batting average (.325) and on-base percentage (.402). In SAC play, the Wolves are hitting .324 with a league-leading .399 on-base percentage. Newberry is also slugging .483 against SAC foes, the third-best mark in the league. 
 
- By contrast, Newberry's pitching staff has been vulnerable at times. The Wolves have a .305 batting average against and 4.89 ERA against SAC opponents. 
 
- Willis and Haley Simonds lead the team with .394 batting averages. Willis has five doubles, four homers, 24 RBI and a team-leading 11 steals. Simonds has racked up a team-best 40 RBI (second in the SAC) with eight doubles and four homers. 
 
- Meyer is hitting .351 in her first season of college softball. The infielder has amassed 40 hits (38 singles), 15 RBI and seven steals. 
 
- Ball – a freshman righty – leads the team with 99.1 innings pitched. She has compiled a 9-8 record with eight complete games, 34 strikeouts and a 2.61 ERA. Marchbanks has 46 strikeouts and a team-best 2.15 ERA over 88.0 innings of action. 
 
- Newberry is an absurd 18-6 at home but just 6-8 away from the Smith Road Complex. 
 
Series History: 
 
- The Lady Railsplitters are 13-10 all-time against Newberry with an 8-2 mark at home and a 5-7 record on the road. 
 
- The home team has swept the last four doubleheaders. The Wolves defeated the Lady Railsplitters 10-1 and 6-1 last season in Newberry, but Lincoln Memorial cruised to 6-5 and 9-6 wins in Harrogate in 2016.
