Women's soccer next test features undefeated Catawba

SALISBURY, N.C. – The Lincoln Memorial University women's soccer team hits the road for its first South Atlantic Conference road match of the year at Catawba (6-0, 2-0 SAC) on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Railsplitters (3-2, 0-1 SAC) dropped their SAC opener 5-2 to Carson-Newman on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Catawba notched a road shutout at Queens, 1-0, on Wednesday to remain undefeated.

- The Lady Railsplitters returned from a 10-day layoff on Wednesday to fall to Carson-Newman 5-2 at the LMU Soccer Complex. The teams traded the first four goals with three coming within the first five minutes. Jessica Cravero tied the game at one in the third minute while Itzel Ballesteros knotted the game at two apiece in the 31st minute.

- Momentum shifted just before halftime as Carson-Newman scored with 15 seconds remaining in the first half to go ahead 3-2. The Eagles went on to add two more second-half goals.

- The Lady Railsplitters were outshot for the first time all season, 22-14. LMU averages 16.2 shots per match for the season compared to 12.8 for opponents.

- Ballesteros and Cravero have accounted for more than half of the team's goals, shots and shots on goal totals. The duo has accounted for seven of LMU's 10 goals, 45 of 81 shots and 19 of 33 shots on goal. Ballesteros (13) leads the Lady Railsplitters by a wide margin in shots on goal, while Cravero (6) is the only other player that has collected more than three.

- Lincoln Memorial has been particularly dominant in the first half of matches this season, having totaled nine of its 10 goals, while outscoring opponents 9-4 and outshooting them 51-31. The Lady Railsplitters have been outscored 4-1 in the second half and outshot 33-30.

- LMU opened 3-0 for the second straight year but is looking to avoid another three-game losing streak to fall back to .500. The Lady Railsplitters haven't had a winning record through their first six games since 2015.

- Lincoln Memorial is winless in its last 15 regular-season road SAC matches dating back to 2015.

- Newcomers have played a big role for the Lady Railsplitters so far this season. Seven new faces – Ballesteros, Cravero, Maria Hernandez, Jessica Steen, Ann-marie O'Connell, Fabienne Loetscher and Lauren Wood – have started every match. Daisy Drake has also appeared in all five matches.

Know the Opponent

- Catawba is off to a 6-0 start for the first time since 2014 and is the only undefeated team remaining in the conference. Catawba hasn't opened a season with seven straight wins since 2004. The Indians can open SAC play at 3-0 for the third straight year.

- Maddie Peck scored Saturday's lone goal just 15 minutes in when she headed in a corner kick. Catawba was outshot 15-7 for the match.

- Shelby Thompson made a season-high eight saves in Saturday's win. In addition to leading the league with six wins, Thompson paces the conference with a .885 save percentage and three shutouts. Catawba has allowed a SAC-low three goals through six matches.

- Jovana Sanchez leads the team with 11 points, which ranks third in the SAC. She has scored four times—twice on penalty kicks—and has assisted three times. Peck and Sarah Steedman have scored twice while four Indians have one goal apiece.

- Catawba relies on a balanced offensive attack, as no player ranks inside the top 20 in the SAC in shots. Six players have attempted between six and nine shots led by nine apiece from Sanchez, Amber Hand and Logan Sandate. Sanchez leads the team with seven shots on goal.

- The Indians have attempted a league-high 37 corner kicks.

Head-to-Head
 
- Lincoln Memorial is 4-8-5 all-time against Catawba. Eight matches have required at least one overtime, including four of the last five and six of the last nine.

- The Indians won 1-0 in overtime in last year's meeting for the team's first win in five tries dating back to 2012. The match was moved from Harrogate to Knoxville.

- Catawba is 4-1-3 at home but hasn't won in Salisbury since 2013. The last two meetings in 2014 and 2016 have ended in ties.
