GREENEVILLE, Tenn. — The Lincoln Memorial University women's soccer team looked like the one we all know Wednesday.
Getting off 28 shots compared to Tusculum's five, the Lady Railsplitters dominated every facet on the pitch as three different players scored en route to a South Atlantic Conference, 3-1, victory at Pioneer Field in Greeneville, Tenn.
"We were good, really good offensively," LMU head coach
Sean Fraser said. "Today we looked more like ourselves — dominated possession — and I was happier that we not only had 70 percent of the possession, but the amount of times we were able to get into the offensive third. When we got in there, we also created a chance so that was really good."
In the 21st minute,
Thenia Zervas was the first to connect on one of those chances. The nifty lefty blasted a shot from 20 yards out, cutting it into the right corner and out of the reach of the goalkeeper for the 1-nil lead.
Her head-turning goal was the first Tusculum (6-7, 2-4 SAC) had given up over a three-match stretch, where the Pioneers blanked conference opponents Anderson and then top-seeded Wingate with Shaw sandwiched in-between.
The score was the Greece native's second of the year — complimented by her team-leading 10th assist that came later in the match — and it was by no surprise to her coaches and teammates.
"The first goal scored by Thenia was awesome," LMU forward
Jessica Cravero said. "She shot from long distance with her "magic left foot," and she put the ball right to the 90-angle! Unbelievable.
"The goal Thenia scored is just a special goal — there's no coaching in that," Fraser added. "It's just her being her. Goal of the season, right?"
Fifteen minutes into the second half, it was the Pioneers who found the back of the net as Jamila Thombs scored her second of the season, but the Lady Railsplitters (9-3, 3-3) didn't let the tie last too long.
Just four minutes later, Cravero found teammate
Rachel Taylor for what proved to be the game-winning goal. The Clarksville, Tenn., native took the pass and continued to answer to her coaches' challenge of adding goals to her game this season as she deposited her team-second best seventh.
"The game was 1-1 at that point when I was on the left side of their goal, an hard position in which I would be able to score," Cravero said, "so, I looked in the middle and I saw Rachel, passed her the ball and she put that ball in. It was 2-1 for us!
"Disappointed Itzel didn't score; disappointed Jessica didn't score but at the same time what they have done for the team is worth goals," Fraser added. "Happy for them and the team. It's good we are getting goals in different areas. Everybody just thinks with our team, 'Oh you've got to stop Itzel and Cravero.' Well, three other people scored today so there you go."
The entire bench and team erupted when the Cravero-to-Taylor connection put the Lady Railsplitters up, but there was more celebrating to come as LMU wasn't finished quite yet.
At 72:17,
Ermelinda Pantaleao made sure the lead stayed that way for good as she scored her second goal the exact way she scored her first, heading in a corner ball from Zervas to cap a 3-1 road victory the Lady Railsplitters needed so dearly.
"It feels double good when you win a game in conference especially against these guys, a local rivalry," Fraser said. "They were on a high and said they were undefeated at home, as well. Not only did we dominate the first half, but the thing that I was concerned about in the first half is they had a really strong wind in their favorite and our goalkeeper had the sun in their eyes and that was really difficult for us to manage, but we did really well.
"I think we could have scored a lot more goals, but got the win and that's what matters. I'm happy about that and now focused on Saturday [at Anderson]."
