No. 15 LMU finishes Sunshine State Winter Classic sixth overall

ORLANDO, Fla. — The Lincoln Memorial University women's bowling team wrapped up the Sunshine State Winter Classic in sixth place behind a 9-4 record, including three top-10 and six top-20 wins at the Boardwalk Bowl Sunday in Orlando, Fla.

The No. 15-ranked Lady Railsplitters opened the best-of-7 match play on the final day with a 4-0 sweep of No. 9 Tulane (204-166, 198-195, 202-168, 221-133).

"We opened the day with great shot-making in the Tulane match," LMU Director of Bowling and Women's Head Coach Joseph Slowinski said. "I was proud of our focus, enthusiasm and teamwork."

Justine Brookover led the way with a 62-percent strike rate and 100-percent baker-double percentage.  The junior Brookover, Marisol Dodson and Christine Hansen all had 100-percent fill-the-frame percentage versus Tulane. Dodson also sported a 55-percent strike rate, while Hansen was right behind her with 50 percent.

In the second match of the day, LMU faced No. 20 Sacred Heart and lost 2-4 (165-207, 201-158, 212-227, 178-200, 192-176, 190-208). Dodson shined again with a 58-percent strike rate and 50 percent baker-double percentage.

"Against Sacred Heart, we responded well and made good shots," Slowinski said. "Several of the matches were close, and I was proud of our bowling quality."

In match No. 3, LMU faced No. 22 Maryville University and fell 2-4 (206-222, 210-187, 178-193, 138-205, 188-177, 174-190) to finish sixth of 14 teams. The sophomore Sanchez had a strike rate of 58 percent, while Brookover had a 83-percent baker-double percentage and a 86-percent fill-the-frame percentage in the final match.

"When we faced Maryville, it was a similar situation to the Vanderbilt match on Saturday," Slowinski said. "We were very flat and just didn't execute well, so we could not get things going and just didn't finish when we had leads in games and didn't respond when we were down. We will be working on improving sustained focus paired with more versatility of shot-making.

"Overall, we had a great weekend with three top-10 victories and six top-20 wins. This illustrates a level we can reach. With 40 days remaining until the East Coast Conference Championship, we are steadily progressing to a level I know we can reach and sustain."
