Quick Hits
-The Lady Railsplitters (5-1) have gotten off to a roaring start. As a team, LMU has a .383 batting average, .475 on-base percentage and a .599 slugging percentage through six games.
-LMU took its momentum from its season-opening weekend, where the Lady Railsplitters finished 3-1, and put it into an impressive outing versus Lee University Tuesday.
-Scoring 16 runs on 22 hits, the Lady Railsplitters took a 9-3 victory in game one followed by a 7-0 win in the final game to improve to 5-1 heading into this weekend.
-Freshman
Bailey Griffith was stellar as she relieved
Justice Smith in the fifth inning in the opening game, finishing the win off by shuting down the Flames to zero runs on three hits. She followed the relief with another gem as she tossed the complete seven-inning, shutout victory allowing the zero runs and just three more hits to remain undefeated in the circle.
-The Lady Railsplitters have been paced by
Audrey Petoskey and
Emma Webb, who are both hitting .500, and
Ty-Kella Goins,
Sierra Hucklebee and
McKenzie Henry's .400-plus batting average thus far.
-Henry showed her defensive skills in the first victory over Lee as she gunned down runners — in the second and third inning — attempting to steal for second to end the frame each time. The other freshman, Hucklebee, also showed her skill set as she tracked down a single over third base from shortstop and zipped it home to get the runner out. The Flames didn't attempt to steal any other bases from there on out of the in-state doubleheader.
Notes on Davis & Elkins
-The Senators will enter Saturday, coming off their first pair of games of the season the day before at Mars Hill.
-Davis & Elkins finished 15-20-1 a season ago under now third-year head coach Jordan Olson, and were led by Rhetta Persinger (.342), Brittany Wade (.304) and Kelsie Millner (.301) at the plate.
-All three of those players are back as juniors for the Senators, but their best pitcher Allie Lapallo, who had a 2.95 ERA behind a 10-9 record, isn't after graduating.
-Returning in the circle, is senior Sara Tobin (3.15 ERA, 2-0) Jade Allee (5.14 ERA, 1-4) and Katelyn Cobb (7.24 ERA, 0-0). The newcomers include freshmen Haley Grindstaff, Jenna Evans and Ava Willis.
Notes on Ohio Dominican
-Like LMU, the Panthers opened their season in a tournament last weekend. Ohio Dominican played six games, going 2-4 over the three-day stay at the Charger Chillout in Huntsville, Ala.
-Over the six games, the Panthers have scored 42 runs behind a .301 batting average, .448 on-base percentage and .431 slugging percentage.
-Appearing in all of those games, Kristen Bales paces the Panthers with a .429 batting average and three triples. Landry Slider (7 RBI) is behind her with a .381 hitting clip, while Kelly Mix and Taylor Farmer each sport a .333 average at the plate.
-In the circle, the Panthers tossed Abby Lamping (13.2 innings, 7.68 ERA) and Cameron Barber (11.2 innings, 5.40 ERA) in four of the games, while Sydney Long (5.1 innings, 3.94 ERA) and Farmer (5.1 innings, 3.94) saw action in three games.
Notes on Mercyhurst
-It's been a rocky start to the season for the Lakers (0-4). Two weekends ago, Mercyhurst attended a tournament held by Newberry College and left winless.
-Since then, the Lakers haven't played, but will attempt to get back in the groove of things with four more games at LMU, playing the Lady Railsplitters once on Sunday.
-Mercyhurst had a team .200 batting average through those four games along with a .296 on-base percentage. Ellie Dougher, Sarah Koscho and Paige Crittela all left with a .333 batting average to show for.
-In the four games, the Lakers were outscored 34-4 as the their trio of pitchers struggled mightily. Tori Pierucci had a 4.57 ERA over 7.2 innings pitched, while Laura Gregory (7.2 innings, 10.04 ERA) and Allison Smith-Dilisi (7.0 innings, 13.00 ERA) followed.
