HARROGATE, Tenn. — The Lincoln Memorial women's lacrosse team bounced back in a big way on Wednesday afternoon, scoring 19 goals in a lopsided 19-3 win over Mars Hill University at the LMU Lacrosse Complex.
The Lady Railsplitters (7-2, 2-1 SAC) put last Saturday's loss to Queens in the rearview mirror, scoring early and often against the out-manned Mars Hill (3-6, 0-2 SAC) squad. LMU raced out to a 6-0 lead in the first 13 minutes of play and never left off the gas.
Erin DePaul led the onslaught with five goals, giving her a team-leading 32 for the season. She got offensive support from
Kennedy Buechner and sophomore
Rachel Gardner with three goals each, two goals each from
Jasmin Click and
Kelly Csenar and single goals from
Jacquelin Turner,
Rachel Bernhardt,
Sydnee Saksa and
Sierra Landsman.
LMU played without three starters,
Casey Kelly,
Melanie Cascio and
Amara Moss, all of whom sat out with injuries.
"We talked about resetting and shaking off the last game," Head Coach
Caitlyn Corace said. "We learned a lot from that last game and showed our resiliency today. People stepped up today. We wanted to be scrappy on the ball and get after it. It shows in the 25 ground balls for us."
One area of concern all season for Corace has been the number of free position shots the Lady Railsplitters were allowing each game, but Mars Hill had only five chances from the eight-meter line.
"We did a much better job in our one-on-one matchups today," Corace said. "We were really in on their hands and forced them to turn the ball over instead of committing the fouls."
Micayla Starnes had a relatively quiet day in goal, only facing 14 shots and making six saves.
DePaul started her day putting LMU on the scoreboard less than two minutes into the game with her first goal. Click added goal number two just over two minutes later and DePaul scored her second of the day at the 22:55 mark.
The floodgates opened after that with Click getting her second, followed by Buechner and DePaul with her third. Mars Hill scored its only two goals of the first half sandwiched around Gardner's first and then LMU added the final six of the first half for a 14-2 lead at the break.
Lincoln Memorial kept its foot on the gas in the second half, outscoring the Lions by a 5-1 count with the running clock in effect.
The offense peppered the Mars Hill goal with 41 shots, 27 of them being on goal.
Next up for LMU will be a trip to Salisbury, N.C. to face Catawba on Saturday.
"We are going to see how it goes with our injured players," said Corace. "It was good to see the players step up today. It helps to have the depth."
Saturday's game will kick off at 11 a.m. Live stats and video links are available at www.lmurailsplitters.com.
