Win over Eastern Kentucky highlights first day of Govs Beach Bash

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – LMU opened up the Govs Beach Bash with a 5-0 loss to host Austin Peay but rebounded with a 4-1 win over Eastern Kentucky to improve to 5-7 on the season Friday afternoon.

The Lady Railsplitters will close out the tournament tomorrow afternoon when they take on Georgia State at 1 p.m. Eastern/Noon Central time.

Austin Peay 5, LMU 0
The Govs took the match 5-0, but each flight was hotly contested. Brooke Taylor and Abby Higgins had a rough first set in the fifth flight, falling 21-4 to APSU's Caroline Waite and MiMi Arrington, but rebounded in the second set, where they fell 21-12.

In the fourth flight, Caitlin Bethell and Emily Walter lost a close 21-10, 21-14 match to Lucy Randall/Cori Theiss, while in the second spot Austin Peay's Ciera Koons and Brooke Moore outlasted Danielle Ged and Danielle Stachura 21-13, 21-7.

In the third flight, Sarah Jones and Kai Wesemann kept it close, falling 21-15, 21-15 to Chloe Stitt and Ginny Gerig, and the first flight went to three sets before APSU's Jenna Panning and Haley Turner outlasted Rylee Storms and Lindsey Nartker 21-10, 18-21, 15-11.

LMU's Erica Whiteaker and Tone Gill won their match in the exhibition flight, defeating Claire Darland and Nina Korfhage 21-19, 21-18.

LMU 4, Eastern Kentucky 1
The Lady Railsplitters took the first meeting between the schools by a 4-1 margin. EKU, a team in their first season of competition, picked up their lone win in the fifth flight as Clairissa Hankinson and Mikayla Logan won over LMU's Taylor and Higgins in three sets 22-20, 20-22, 15-13.

LMU grabbed their first point in the fourth spot, as Bethell and Walter won a close 21-18, 22-20 match over Rachel Woody and Kennedy Wilson.

The duo of Wesemann and Jones then dominated in their flight for their eighth win of the season, winning 21-9, 21-7 over Maria Ferragonio and Kaylin Johnson at the three spot.

In the first spot, Storms and Nartker picked up the 21-13, 21-13 win over Dena Tekavec and Jovana Bulatovic to improve their season record to 8-4.

The Danielles then closed out the match with their 21-9, 21-4 thrashing of Sydney Schoen/Katelynn Caserma-Kloeble in the second flight.
