Beach Volleyball Sweeps Competition at SMC Tournament

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Lincoln Memorial University beach volleyball program has now achieved the most wins in a single season after going 4-0 at the Spartanburg Methodist Tournament, dropping just two sets out of 20 sets played on the weekend.

Game One – Lincoln Memorial 4, Spartanburg Methodist 1

"The first game we had was really an adjustment to the wind," said coach Pennington-Russell. "We had to figure out how to use it to our advantage and I think that after we spent a couple points into it, we were able to capitalize on the wind and use it to our advantage. Katherine Bedel and Sevgi Koyuncu really stepped up with their shots and serving to give them a huge lead."

Game Two – Lincoln Memorial 5, St. Andrews 0

"The second game was a hard-fought battle especially at the ones seed. Kristen and Cardi falling at 27-29 and we talked about taking back control of the game," said coach Pennington-Russell. "Their communication and ability to step up the serve receive game made the difference in the third set. At the 5's, Ketura and Michera had an impressive run. Ketura had some great shots and Michera was playing awesome defense and we were able to spread out the score and take the lead."

Game Three – Lincoln Memorial 4, St. Andrews 1

"St. Andrews was a team with lots of perseverance and tenacity," said coach Pennington-Russell. I think it was good for us to see that kind of hustle team. We talked about taking advantage of every rep and every opportunity to get better and that's what we took from this game. Emma and Emily preformed super well with great shots and awesome serves. I love seeing our girls take some big swings out in the sand."

Game Four – Lincoln Memorial 5, Truett McConnell 0

"Nice the sweep today was a battle with the winds blowing," said coach Pennington-Russell. "All the teams brought great intensity to every single point. Very proud coaching moment to see the girls having fun and also competing giving their all."
