Railsplitters host King for Vs. Cancer game on Tuesday

4/15/2019 10:17:00 AM

HARROGATE, Tenn. – The Railsplitters begin the final week of the regular season on Tuesday when they host King for the annual Vs. Cancer game at 3 p.m. at Lamar Hennon Field.

Lincoln Memorial (30-13, 17-4 SAC) enters Tuesday's contest after taking two of three at Tusculum last weekend to put itself in position to win the first South Atlantic Conference regular-season title in program history, while King (14-24) is in a bit of a tailspin with losses in seven of its last 10 games, including two of three against Erskine this past weekend to fall to 7-15 in Conference Carolinas play.

More important than what happens on the field during the game is what will happen following the game, as the Railsplitters will culminate their annual Vs. Cancer fundraising initiative with a head-shaving event. Members of the coaching staff and players will shave their heads as a public show of support for pediatric cancer victims.

All season long, Lincoln Memorial has been raising money for the Vs. Cancer Foundation, which supports childhood cancer victims. The Railsplitters set a goal of raising $12,000 this year and have surpassed that goal by a significant sum, racking up $15,718 that will go directly to the Vs. Cancer Foundation.

LMU is still collecting donations online and will also accept physical contributions on Tuesday throughout the game and during the head-shaving event. In order to donate online, click here

Quick Hits

- The Railsplitters won game one at Tusculum 5-0 behind another sensational start from Ethan Elliott, who struck out 16 without issuing a walk in a complete-game shutout. The lefty allowed just four singles and retired the last 15 batters he faced to move to 9-2 on the season.

- Tyler Adams homered and drove in five runs to lead the Railsplitters to an 8-5 series-clinching win against Tusculum in game two. Seth Hunt also recorded a pair of hits to match the program career hits record with hits 239 and 240. He tied Logan Augustine, who racked up his program-record total from 2015-18.

- Lincoln Memorial scored five runs in the top of the first inning in game three at Tusculum, but the Pioneers answered with five in the bottom half of that inning and pushed across the game-winning runs in the bottom of the fourth in a 7-5 victory.

- With two wins in the series, the Railsplitters moved to 17-4 in SAC play, which is two games back of first-place Newberry, which swept Catawba over the weekend. Lincoln Memorial hosts Newberry this weekend to close out the regular season and would clinch the first regular-season conference championship in program history with a sweep.

- Nate Stinson continued his elite offense season this past weekend, going 6-for-12 in the series at Tusculum to push his batting average to .401. The junior has now hit safely in 12 straight games and leads the team with 67 hits.

- Brent Richey had multiple hits in all three games at Tusculum to extend his hitting streak to 11 games. Since a mid-season slump, the outfielder has multiple hits in seven of his last eight games, catapulting his batting average to .325.

- Hunt needs only one more hit to break the program career record for hits. The senior went hitless for only the eighth time this season in the series finale at Tusculum.

- Chris Salvey looks to break out of a brief funk at the plate as the senior first baseman is just 1-for-15 over the past four games.

- The Railsplitters are 14-4 at Lamar Hennon Field this season compared to 16-9 on the road.

Notes on King

- The Tornado have struggled at the plate with a .253 team batting average and .356 on-base percentage. Only three everyday players are hitting over .300 for King this season compared to seven for Lincoln Memorial.

- Tony Valdes leads the team with 44 hits, compiling a .338 batting average with 13 doubles, five homers and 21 RBI. Hunter Barbour and Kevin Barbato are just off that pace with 43 hits apiece and .319 and .309 respective batting averages. Barbour has 29 RBI and four homers, while Barbato leads the team with 31 RBI.

- King has been a sieve on the mount with a 7.38 team earned run average and .295 batting average against.

- The Tornado have also struggled mightily on the road with a 4-12 record away from Bristol compared to a more respectable 10-12 mark at home.

- King has been outscored 300-207 cumulatively this season, including 47-31 in the first inning, 41-23 in the fourth and 49-30 in the sixth inning.

Series History

- The Railsplitters are 28-21-1 all-time against King, but suffered an 8-3 loss to the Tornado earlier this season in Bristol, Tenn.

- In that loss, Lincoln Memorial left nine runners stranded on base, while King scored five runs in the fifth to power the victory. Ben Wiley took the loss after allowing five runs with three walks and four hits over 4.2 innings, while Hunt was the only LMU player with multiple hits. The Tornado scattered six extra-base hits, including homers from Barbato and Austin Meyer.

- LMU is 20-9 all-time against King in Harrogate and has won five straight home games in the series.
