TAVARES, Fla. – The LMU beach volleyball team opened the day by defeating Carson-Newman 3-2 to close out pool play. Then they split in the challenge round, defeating Eckerd 3-2 before falling to Colorado Mesa 4-1 and snapping a three-match win streak.
They now advance to the Silver bracket, where they will face Florida Southern at 9 a.m. Easter morning. Should they win they will play in the Silver bracket championship match vs. either Saint Leo or Stevenson at noon.
LMU 3, Carson-Newman 2
In a match postponed from Friday due to lightning, the Lady Railsplitters picked up three relatively easy wins in the first, second and fifth flights, but lost close matches in the third and fourth flights en route to their third win of the season over Carson-Newman.
Lindsey Nartker and
Rylee Storms took the win over Summer Coulter and Abby Struewing 22-20, 21-14 in the first spot, while
Danielle Ged and
Danielle Stachura defeated Grace Seymour and Montgomery Sauter 21-17, 21-11 in the second flight. The fifth flight saw
Caitlin Bethell and
Emily Walter win over Taryn Nichols and Dilyn Palmer 21-4, 21-6.
The Lady Eagles picked up hard-fought wins from LMU in the third and fourth flights. In the third spot, Aryana Fazelnia and Kelly Hughes defeated
Kai Wesemann and
Sarah Jones 7-21, 21-16, 15-13. At flight four, Lexy Headley and Lauren Williams won over
Erica Whiteaker and
Tone Gill 21-16, 21-19.
LMU 3, Eckerd 2
LMU defeated the Tritons for the second time this season in a relatively easy fashion. Eckerd forfeited the fourth and fifth flights due to not having enough players, so LMU started the match with a 2-0 lead.
The Lady Railsplitters then won the match when Wesemann and Jones defeated Payton Meader and Ivey Andrews 21-16, 21-14 in the third spot.
The Tritons picked up a pair of three-set victories in the first two flights, where Stephanie Bogda and Rebekah Meadows defeated Nartker and Storms in the first spot 26-24, 15-12, 15-10; and Fernanda Reis and Paula Hoffmann won over Ged and Stachura 21-23, 21-15, 15-7 in the second flight.
Colorado Mesa 4, LMU 1
The Lady Railsplitters faced off against the Mavericks for the first time ever, with a trip to the Gold bracket on the line. In the end, Colorado Mesa held off LMU for the hard-fought 4-1 win.
In the first flight, Nartker and Storms fell to Portia Valdez and Katie Scherr 21-16, 21-15, while in the second flight Ged and Stachura lost in three sets to Samantha Ritter and Macie Lachemann 20-22, 22-20, 17-15.
Wesemann and Jones grabbed LMU's lone point with their 21-17, 21-19 win over Lindy Dixon and Hailey Crane in the third spot.
Gill and Whiteaker were bested by Ara Norwood and Holly Schmidt 21-11, 21-11 in the fourth spot and at the fifth flight CMU's Magdalena Dabrowski and Kerstin Layma won over Bethell and Walter 23-21, 21-18.
