Beach volleyball spoils Tusculum's home debut with 3-2 victory Wednesday afternoon

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – The LMU beach volleyball team spoiled the home debut of Tusculum's beach volleyball program as they defeated the Pioneers 3-2 on a beautiful Spring Wednesday afternoon.

With the win, the Lady Railsplitters moved to 2-4 on the season.

This is Tusculum's first-year of beach volleyball, and there was a crowd of over 500 on hand to watch the match.

LMU picked up the first point of the match in the fifth flight as Emily Walter and Caitlin Bethell dropped the first set against Catherine Clingan and Lydia Collins 16-21 before rallying back 21-16 in the second set and rolling out to the 15-7 win in the third set.

Shortly afterward, the Pioneers tied the match at 1-1 as Katelyn Weems and Jordan Zaleski used a late run to narrowly edge out Brooke Taylor and Abby Higgins 16-21, 21-18, 15-13 in the fourth flight.

The Lady Railsplitters then swept the second and third flights to claim the match victory. At the second flight, Rylee Storms and Lindsey Nartker coasted to their fourth win of the season as they downed Skyellar Hall and Gabby Gray 21-15, 21-16.

A few minutes later, LMU's Kai Wesemann and Sarah Jones remained undefeated on the season as they improved to 6-0 with the three-set win over Marissa Morgan and Lana Vujosevic. They coasted to the 21-13 win in the first set but some mistakes and unlucky bounces cost them in set two 11-21. The LMU duo then shot out to the early lead in the third set and held on for the 15-13 win.

At flight one, Danielle Ged and Danielle Stachura rolled out to the 21-18 win in the first set over TU's Melissa Mazur and Haley Davis. The Pioneer duo then rallied back in set two to claim the 21-13 win. In the third set, Mazur and Davis took a 13-11 lead only to see Ged and Stachura rally back to take a 14-13 lead. Two LMU match points ended up with Tusculum winning both to take the 15-14 lead. On a long rally on the Pioneer match point the kill attempt by TU fell just inside the corner lines, giving the Pioneers with flight victory and their second overall match point by a 16-14 margin.

LMU will next take the court when make the short trip to Jefferson City on both Saturday and Sunday, where they will take on Stevenson and Carson-Newman. On both days The Lady Railsplitters and Stevenson will face off at noon, followed by LMU and Carson-Newman at 3:00 pm.
