Malherbe slips into tie for 22nd at NCAA Division II South Super Regional

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – Lincoln Memorial golfer Lise Malherbe fired a gritty five-over par 77 in round two of the NCAA Division II South Super Regional on Tuesday at Cleveland Country Club in Cleveland, Tenn., to remain in contention to earn a spot to the national championship. The senior, who opened the 54-hole event with a two-over par 74, will enter the final round of the regional in a tie for 22nd place.

It was a battle from start to finish for Malherbe, who did not record a birdie on the day, but used a solid putting stroke and some key saves to avoid any big scores and salvage the round.

On her second hole of the day at the par-four 11th, Malherbe had to punch out of the woods and then made a nifty chip to escape with only a bogey. Three holes later, she was able to get up and down out of the bunker to save par, which was part of a string of five straight pars for Malherbe.

She was unable to keep that par train rolling, though, dropping a pair of shots on the last two holes of her opening nine. On the par-three 17th hole, Malherbe left her tee shot short of the green and could not get up and down for par. She then missed left of the fairway with her tee shot on the 18th, had to punch back into the fairway and missed the par putt to make the turn at three-over par.

Malherbe bogeyed the par-four second hole as well, but nailed a six-footer to avoid a potential double bogey. After that, she reeled off five straight pars again, a stretch highlighted by a tricky par-saving putt on No. 5 and an up-and-down for another par save at No. 6.

After nearly holing her first birdie of the day on a long putt at No. 7, Malherbe dropped another shot on the par-four eighth hole after failing to get up and down out of the back bunker.

Malherbe's seven-over par total of 151 is currently nine strokes back of the lead shared by Lynn's Helen Kreuzer and Saint Leo's Isabel Nesteus. That duo is sitting at two-under par, while Limestone's Pilar Martinez is at one-under par for the tournament.

Lynn is leading the team competition at 15-over par, Saint Leo is second at 18-over par, Limestone is third at 21-over par and Barry is fourth at 22-over par. Florida Tech is two shots back of Barry at 24-over par.

The top-four teams and the top-four individuals not affiliated with any of those teams will advance to the national championship, which is set to be held May 14-18 in West Palm Beach, Fla.

Malherbe will tee off in the final round of the South Super Regional at 9:20 a.m. on Wednesday morning. Live results are available here.
