Box Score 2 HARROGATE, Tenn. – Lincoln Memorial captured both doubles points for the first time this season fueling a pair of wins over visiting West Virginia Wesleyan College on Friday evening. The women's team took all matches played for a 7-0 win, while the men prevailed 5-2 over the Bobcats.
The Lady Railsplitters continued their solid play in taking each singles in straight sets, although #3 doubles was extended to a tie-breaker where
Amanda Dahlstrom and
Kushi Khandoji snuck out a 7-6 (7-2) decision.
Laura Jipescu,
Valentina Ascarrunz , and
Sophia Aray each won in the top 3 positions, as the Splitters raised their record to 4-1 on the spring.
"Overall, the girls continue to improve and get experience," said head coach Mark Walters. "The freshmen have grown up a lot in the past few weeks, so these matches help get everyone a confidence boost and that will help when SAC matches start next month."
The men's team stumbled at #1 doubles, losing 4-6, but rebounded to serve out the other two matches for a 1-0 lead heading into singles.
Franco Battaglino battled well at the #1 line against Bobcat senior Taylor Papworth, but eventually fell 2-6, 5-7. Likewise, LMU's Mateo Rivera dropped his #2 match to Caillo Salvi 2-6, 3-6. The Splitters won the rest of the matches behind
Thom Hermans,
Fabian Sjokvist, Will Jonsson, and
Luca Pavan to clinch the win. The men are now 1-2 after a tough opening weekend.
"We are taking a look at some guys right now to determine what are strongest lineup will be in March, and some guys are already stepping up," said Walters. " I really like what I'm seeing from Franco and Luca, and Fabian and Thom are showing their grit. I think it's coming into focus but we need some people to step it up in the doubles if we want compete in the conference."
