Box Score 2 HARROGATE, Tenn. – The Lincoln Memorial men's and women's tennis teams took a pair of 6-1 wins against visiting Bethel University Wednesday afternoon at the Tennis Indoor Center. The Railsplitters won the doubles point in both matches to grab the early lead, and then won 5 of the 6 singles points to cruise to their victories. Bethel is an NAIA member of the Mid-South Conference, and the meeting was the first between the two schools.
LMU returns to the home court on Sunday, March 13 against the University of Illinois at Springfield. First serve for both teams 100pm at the Poteat Complex, with the TIC as indoor backup in case of inclement weather.
Seven different men's players contributed to the win for the 'Splitters (7-5).
Harper Mills,
Franco Battaglino,
Charlie Thursfield, JeanPierre Santamaria and
Nic Goslar each notched a singles and doubles win for LMU, while
Luca Pavan teamed with Mills for the #1 doubles point. The LMU women (12-1) got two wins apiece from
Laura Jipescu,
Sophia Aray,
Haley White, and
Kushi Khandoji, and
Samantha Hogan chipped in a single point as well.
"This was a good opportunity for us to get some new faces into the lineup and give the reserves a chance to compete against a solid team," said head coach Mark Walters. "The girls especially played well and got to step up a bit. We have some tough matches coming in the next couple of weeks and these days help keep everyone sharp."
Mills defeated BU's Juan Hernandez 6-0 6-1, and
Franco Battaglino bounced back from a tough loss yesterday for a 6-2, 6-4 win over Marcos Neves. Santamaria was a winner in a super tie-break against Pedro Donodon 6-2, 2-6 (10-6) in the match of the day.
Aray turned back Bethel's Marina Zotelli 6-4, 6-3 at #2, while White beat Lexi Daniels by a 6-4, 6-1 score in the day's closest matches.
