Men's and women's track and field sets the tone for outdoor season at EKU Invitational

Richmond, VA -- The Lincoln Memorial track and field programs delivered a standout performance this past weekend at the Eastern Kentucky Invitational Meet in Richmond, Kentucky, as both the men's and women's teams secured high podium finishes and a slew of personal bests. The women's squad was highlighted by individual and relay victories, led by Callie Wetzel, who captured first place in the 400 meter hurdles with a personal best time of 1:04.35. Wetzel also joined forces with Jacie Begley, Theresa Brosthaus, and Alyssa Roberts to claim the 4x400 meter relay title with a time of 4:01.98. On the men's side, the 4x400 meter relay team of Joel Boerkey, Luis Borkey, Hunter Preston, and Caleb Chittum also found success, securing a runner-up finish with a time of 3:21.17.

The distance runners provided a significant points haul for the Railsplitters across multiple events. In the women's 1500 meters, Theresa Brosthaus led the way with a third-place finish in 4:48.28, followed by Jacie Begley in sixth at 4:55.30 and Katrien Sherwood in 5:30.46. The men's 1500 meters saw Luis Borkey take fourth place in 3:57.73, with Joel Boerkey finishing in 4:08.47 and Sam Fulton in 4:13.55. The 3000 meter races were equally productive, as Jaxson Branham secured a second-place finish for the men in 8:41.36 and Emma Hainzer took fourth for the women in 10:25.31. They were supported by strong runs from Conner Chandler, Weslyn McIntosh, Reaghan Curde, Simon Fillers, Greta Chizzali, Vance Laster, Natalia Iker, Olivia Truelove, Allyssa Gent, and David Gober.

In the sprint and hurdle events, the Railsplitters demonstrated consistent speed. For the women, Jersy Nelke and Maggie Sanderson competed in the 100 meter hurdles, while Nelke and Sanderson also joined Maggie Sanderson in the 200 meter dash. For the men, Trevyn Beam and Justus Long led the short sprints, with Beam clocking 11.51 seconds in the 100 meters. The men's 400 meter hurdles featured Nile Mclymont and Hunter Preston, who finished fourth and fifth respectively. Additionally, the men's 400 meter dash saw a deep rotation including Caleb Chittum, Justus Long, Clayon Cooper, and Orion Wright, while Roman Borghetti-Metz and Alyssa Roberts represented the team well in the 800 meter events.

Field athletes anchored the team's performance with impressive marks in the throwing rings, where results were converted to feet to reflect their standing. Jackson Clonce led the men's throwers with a seventh-place finish in the discus at 138 feet 8 inches and a tenth-place finish in the hammer at 145 feet 10 inches. Avery Hatfield took ninth in the men's hammer with a toss of 148 feet 11 inches, while Asher Hatfield placed eighth in the javelin at 129 feet 1 inch. For the women, Kylee Alvis reached 108 feet 3 inches in the discus and 128 feet 10 inches in the hammer, while Cate Turner secured an eighth-place finish in the hammer throw with a mark of 139 feet 10 inches. Other notable field contributions came from Emily McPherson in the high jump and Madeline Dalton and Olivia Edenfield in the throwing events.
