Top 20 moments of 2015 - No. 4: Men's Basketball Hosts NCAA Tournament, Blasts North Greenville

HARROGATE, Tenn. -- As the end of the year approaches, the Lincoln Memorial University athletics department is counting down the top 20 moments of 2015. The men's basketball team makes its second appearance in the countdown at No. 4, as the Railsplitters played an NCAA Tournament game at Tex Turner Arena for the first time in program history and made it a night to remember.

In the four seasons preceding the 2014-15 campaign, Lincoln Memorial had finished ever so close to earning the No. 1 seed and hosting duties for the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional, only to see that opportunity slip just out of reach.

But after winning their third straight South Atlantic Conference regular season title and breaking their own league record for wins, the Railsplitters were finally selected to host the 2015 NCAA Southeast Regional in its entirety at Tex Turner Arena, bringing the NCAA Tournament to Harrogate for the first time ever.

The Southeast Regional began on March 14, with the top-seeded Railsplitters set to open against the North Greenville Crusaders.

In front of a raucous crowd of nearly 2,500, the Railsplitters put on an absolute show and validated their claim as the region's top seed, canning 16 three-pointers in a 95-62 triumph over the Crusaders.

LMU held a mere 38-29 lead at the end of the first half, but exploded for 57 points in the second stanza and limited North Greenville to 34.5 percent shooting and a 1-for-10 clip from three over that same span.

Keenan Peterson led the way with 23 points and 12 rebounds, while Lorenza Ross had 20 points and four assists. Gerel Simmons (Accokeek, Md.) sparked LMU off of the bench with 16 points and four three-pointers.

With the win, the Railsplitters advanced to the semifinals of the Southeast Regional for the fourth consecutive season and became only the second team in program history to win 30 games in a season, matching the 1976-77 team as the only other to accomplish that feat.
