Lady Railsplitters pay Trojans a visit Tuesday

HARROGATE, Tenn. -- Before the Turkey Day festivities, the Lady Railsplitters (3-1, 2-0 SAC) aim to avenge a season-ending loss to the Anderson Trojans (2-0, 1-0 SAC) as the two teams will meet on Tuesday, November 25 for a South Atlantic Conference bout in Anderson, S.C. Tip-off in that contest is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Abney Athletic Center.

Lincoln Memorial swept the two regular-season meetings against Anderson during the 2013-14 campaign, winning 63-50 at Tex Turner Arena before eeking out a 62-58 win in the Palmetto State. But, the Lady Railsplitters drew the Trojans for the quarterfinals of the South Atlantic Conference Championship, and Anderson ended LMU's season with a 71-64 overtime victory. Lincoln Memorial trailed by as many 18 in that contest before rallying to tie it at the end of regulation.

The Lady Railsplitters are off to a 2-0 start in SAC play for the second consecutive season after failing to accomplish that feat in any of their first seven seasons in the league. Those two wins have been earned in markedly different ways. The Lady Railsplitters accounted for their first 100 point performance in four seasons in a 100-90 win over the Mars Hill Lions last Wednesday, but they found themselves in a defensive struggle on Saturday at Queens. Despite recording a season-low in points (52), field goals (18) and field goal percentage (31 percent), the Lady Railsplitters limited the Royals to just 25 percent shooting in a 52-41 victory. Queens' 12 field goals were the fewest by an LMU opponent since the Lady Railsplitters held Benedict to only 11 buckets on November 29, 2005. The Lady Railsplitters also broke the program's single-game record for rebounds by demolishing the Royals 69-28 on the glass, surpassing the previous record of 63.

Anderson remains unbeaten at 2-0 overall, boasting a win over USC Aiken, who stands as LMU's only loss of the season, as well as a 62-48 triumph over Lenoir-Rhyne in their South Atlantic Conference opener Saturday. The Trojans limited the league's preseason favorite to only 34.5 percent shooting while forcing 23 turnovers, which they converted into 23 points. That defensive effort offset what was an otherwise lukewarm offensive game, as Anderson shot just 39.7 percent from the field with a 7-for-13 effort at the free throw line.

Senior guard Sierra Simpson leads the Trojans with 16.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.0 steals per contest, while sophomore Heather Jankowy is pitching in 13 points in 32.5 minutes per game off of the bench. Junior guard Jasmine Franklin is contributing 11 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists per contest. Jennifer Monroe is pulling in nine rebounds per appearance, while Alexis Dillard is corralling 8.5 rebounds a night.

The Trojans have exhibited an up-tempo style through the first two games of the season, as they are averaging 66.5 shot attempts per contest. Anderson is near the bottom of the SAC in field goal percentage with a 34.6 percent mark, but they rank second in the league with a 36.4 percent clip from three-point range (12-for-33). Defense has been the key to the Trojans' early success as they are limiting opponents to 56.5 points per game on 32.8 percent shooting, both of which lead the SAC.

The Lady Railsplitters are looking to start 3-0 in South Atlantic Conference play for the second straight season while improving upon their 4-6 overall record against Anderson. Last season marked LMU's first win over the Trojans in Anderson, S.C. as the Lady Railsplitters are 1-4 all-time at the Abney Center.

The duo of Stephanie Smith (La Vergne, Tenn.) and Kiara Rawls (Killeen, Texas) lead the Lady Railsplitters into Tuesday's contest. Smith is averaging 15.2 points, 9.5 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per game, while Rawls is tallying 14.8 points and 5.5 assists per appearance. Senior Aisjah Roan (Louisville, Ky.) backs that pair with 11.2 points and 4.8 rebounds per outing. Sophomore Megan Pittman (Liberty, Ky.) leads the league in rebounds per game with 12.

After Saturday's record-breaking rebounding performance, the Lady Railsplitters have established themselves as the most dominant rebounding team in the league by a substantial sum. Lincoln Memorial's plus 27.5 rebounding margin is nearly 20 boards more than Carson-Newman, who is second in that department with a plus 8.5 margin. Like the Trojans, the Lady Railsplitters also play at a break-neck offensive pace, averaging 68 shot attempts and 28.8 field goals per contest. Lincoln Memorial is second in the SAC with 74.5 points per contest.
