Fourth-seeded Lady Railsplitters welcome fifth-seeded Catawba for SAC Championship quarterfinal battle

Winner advances to Rock Hill, S.C. to play either No.1 Lenoir-Rhyne or No. 8 Anderson

HARROGATE, Tenn. -- A rematch of last season's South Atlantic Conference Championship quarterfinal awaits the fourth-seeded Lady Railsplitters (9-4-2) on Tuesday as the fifth-seeded Catawba Indians (11-5-2) invade the LMU Soccer Complex pitch for a 2 p.m. kickoff. The winner of Tuesday's quarterfinal round draw earns a spot in Friday's semifinal match in Rock Hill, S.C.

Admission costs $8 for adults, $3 for children ages 13 and under, and $2 for college students with valid ID, but the Lincoln Memorial University athletic department will be admitting the first 50 LMU students, faculty or staff members to the match free of charge. Free admission will only be granted by showing a current LMU ID at the gate. Official SAC passes will also be accepted.

The Lady Railsplitters enter Tuesday's contest after claiming a fourth-place SAC finish, the program's highest league placement since capturing the regular-season crown in route to an appearance in the second round of the NCAA Tournament back in 2007.

Lincoln Memorial and Catawba clashed in the quarterfinals of the 2013 SAC Championship, but the roles were reversed as the then fifth-seeded Lady Railsplitters traveled to Salisbury, N.C. to play the fourth-seeded Indians. Despite being outshot by a narrow 17-13 margin, goals by Michelle Allen and Rachael Vienneau (Woodstock, Ga.) powered the Blue and Gray to a 2-1 triumph, their first SAC Championship quarterfinal win since that 2007 campaign.

The two squads should be familiar with one another as LMU and Catawba met less than two weeks ago. Fernanda Miaci (Sao Jose dos Campos, Brazil) put the Lady Railsplitters in the lead in the 37th minute, but Kiersten Peck notched the equalizer in the 66th minute, leading to a 1-1 double overtime draw in Salisbury. The contest was unusually evenly matched as the Lady Railsplitters accumulated a narrow 13-10 shot edge and a 7-6 shots on goal advantage.

Since that encounter, the Lady Railsplitters and Indians have gone in somewhat different directions. Lincoln Memorial's streak of consecutive matches without a loss was ended at 10 in a 3-2 defeat at Trevecca Nazarene last Tuesday, while Wingate handed LMU a 3-0 loss in the regular-season finale Sunday. The Indians, meanwhile, drew with Pfeiffer in nonconference action and bested Mars Hill 4-2 to wrap up the regular season schedule.

Catawba is among the most productive offensive teams in the South Atlantic Conference, as they have accounted for 33 goals, 277 shots and 146 shots on goal, ranking in the top three in the league in each of those categories. The Indians have produced a SAC-leading 93 corner kicks in 18 matches. The visitors from Salisbury have shown some chinks defensively, though, with 23 goals allowed and a 1.22 goals against average.

The Indians are keyed by Kate Weisner, who has racked up 11 goals on 43 shots and 25 shots on goal. Becky Frost has pitched in six goals and a pair of assists, while Karen Presnell has tallied four goals on 16 shots on target. Allison Baucom and the aforementioned Kiersten Peck have posted three goals apiece. Peck also leads the Indians with seven assists.

The Lady Railsplitters will be opposed by goalkeeper Bethany Davis, who has allowed only 14 goals while compiling 72 saves in 1,276 minutes played. She is one of five keepers in the South Atlantic Conference with a goals against average below one (0.99.). Tuesday's match marks Davis' fifth start against Lincoln Memorial as she has allowed only four goals with 21 saves in the four previous head-to-head encounters.

After only permitting five goals in her first 11 appearances, LMU junior keeper Kayla Stephens (Keller, Texas) has allowed eight in her last four showings. Still yet, Stephens ranks sixth in the SAC with 13 goals allowed while she carries a cumulative 1.01 goals against average.

The Lady Railsplitters are led into Tuesday's contest by seniors Nicole McKinney (Ooltewah, Tenn.) and Fernanda Miaci and sophomore Michelle Hunter (Tecumseh, Ontario). Miaci paces Lincoln Memorial with eight goals and three assists, while McKinney has accumulated four goals and an assist. Hunter has sparked the Lady Railsplitters with six goals and a pair of assists.

First kick between Lincoln Memorial and Catawba is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the LMU Soccer Complex. Live stats and a free video broadcast will be available at www.LMURailsplitters.com. The winner earns a spot in the SAC Championship semifinal round in Rock Hill, S.C., where a match-up against either top-seeded Lenoir-Rhyne or eighth-seeded Anderson awaits.
