HARROGATE, Tenn. -- In the second leg of a five-game homestand, the 10th-ranked Railsplitters (6-0) welcome the Ohio Midwestern Rams (0-6) to Tex Turner Arena Wednesday night for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
Â
Lincoln Memorial is coming off of a 100-56 shellacking of the Tennessee Wesleyan Bulldogs on Saturday, as the Railsplitters finished with a season-high 58.7 percent shooting clip. Along with that, LMU knocked down 11 of its 20 three-point attempts for a 55 percent mark. Twelve of the 15 players to appear in that contest registered at least two points.
Â
Through the first six games of the season, the Railsplitters have flourished in the same areas they have dominated over the past five seasons, which have brought forth three South Atlantic Conference regular season titles and two SAC tournament championships. Lincoln Memorial leads the conference in field goal percentage (52.2 percent), three point field goal percentage (48.9 percent), rebounding margin (12.7), points per game allowed (61.7) and opponents' field goal percentage (37.9).
Â
Despite continuing to dominate in those key departments, the early forecast projects that this will be a much different LMU squad than in years past. For the first time in the Schertz era, the Railsplitters are led in scoring by two guards:
Luquon Choice (Laurens, S.C.) and
Lorenza Ross (Savannah, Ga.). In Schertz's first six seasons, a post player led that Railsplitters in scoring each year while the team's top two scorers resided in the interior in five of those six seasons. Until
Keenan Peterson (College Park, Ga.) exploded for a career-high 22 points in LMU's win over Tennessee Wesleyan, a member of the front court had not exceeded 20 points in a game this season. That was only the third time a post has produced double-digit points in a game.
Â
Wednesday's contest should afford the Railsplitters an opportunity to gain some confidence and untethered experience in the post. Along with Peterson and junior
Curtis McMillion (Fayetteville, N.C.), who currently leads the front court group with 8.5 points in 19.7 minutes per game, the Railsplitters' rotation of interior players in composed of a sophomore [
Paul Woodson (Cincinnati, Ohio)], a redshirt freshman [
Dawud Fisher-Grace (Bedford, Ohio)], and two true freshmen [
Dorian Pinson (Greenville, S.C.),
Emanuel Terry (Birmingham, Ala.)].
Â
The Railsplitters and Ohio Midwestern have four previous encounters between the two programs, and Lincoln Memorial has won all four of those contests by an average of 50 points. The most recent meeting was the narrowest margin separating the two teams of their four head-to-head bouts, a 79-46 win in Harrogate on November 10, 2012.
Â
The Rams enter Wednesday's contest following a 116-83 loss at Notre Dame College in South Euclid, Ohio. Ohio Midwestern was an efficient 30-for-68 from the field (44.1 percent), but they committed 22 turnovers which the Falcons converted into 33 points. The Rams also relinquished a sizzling 50.6 percent shooting effort to the homestanding Falcons. Patrick White and Kodey Jackson paced OMC with 14 points apiece, while Brennan Gross compiled 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting. Ahmad Dauda pitched in 12 points with a team-leading nine rebounds.
Â
The Railsplitters are vying for their 32nd consecutive nonconference victory at Tex Turner Arena, which would extend a streak that spans all the way back to the 2008-09 campaign, Schertz's first at the helm.
