Lady Railsplitters pay Cobras a visit Saturday

HARROGATE, Tenn. -- With wins in four of their last five games, the Lady Railsplitters (11-8, 8-5 SAC) take the longest road trip of the season on Saturday when they pay a visit to the Coker Cobras (7-12, 3-10 SAC) for a South Atlantic Conference tilt in Hartsville, S.C. Tip-off in that contest is set for 2 p.m. inside of the Harris E. & Louise H. DeLoach Center.

Lincoln Memorial keeps finding ways to win in the face of an unrelenting string of injuries. Stephanie Smith (La Vergne, Tenn.), Kortnay Cox (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) and Samantha Satterlee (Junction City, Kan.) have missed 27 combined games since December, while Katrina Ottesen (Chandler, Ariz.) has missed the past two games. Star guard Aisjah Lee (Louisville, Ky.) has been forced to miss three games total this season.

The Lady Railsplitters were down to just eight available players for Wednesday's SAC battle against Brevard, but pulled out a hard-fought 70-65 victory at Tex Turner Arena nevertheless.  That game featured 12 ties and 11 lead changes, with the Lady Railsplitters finishing on the winning end of that final push. An Ariadna Simon free throw gave the Tornados a 65-64 lead with 1:53 to play, but Kiara Rawls (Killeen, Texas) buried two freebies in the ensuing possession to put the Lady Railsplitters on top for good. Ross Mathis (Greer, S.C.) iced it with a three-pointer and a free throw in LMU's final two possessions.

Mathis was one of three players to tally a career-high in points for the Lady Railsplitters in Wednesday's win, as she scored 17 points on a 4-of-6 mark from three-point range. Britney Guy (Locust Grove, Ga.) scored a career-best 14 points with eight rebounds in 28 minutes of action, while Sydnie Anderson (Cleveland, Tenn.) pitched in 10 points in 19 minutes. Freshman guard Shea Coker (Knoxville, Tenn.) was stellar once again, pouring in 15 points with three three-pointers.

The Lady Railsplitters have been mostly magnificent at home all season, but the road has been a totally different story. Lincoln Memorial has not won a true road contest since its first one of the season, a 52-41 win at Queens on November 22. The Lady Railsplitters have dropped five straight games away from Tex Turner, most recently suffering a heartbreaking 85-84 setback at Mars Hill last Wednesday.

Something will have to give on Saturday, though, as the Coker Cobras has lost three consecutive games and six of their eight games since the calendar flipped to 2015. The Cobras are coming off of a grizzly 71-44 home loss to Wingate. Coker didn't put a single player in double figures in the contest, shooting 31.7 percent from the field with a 2-for-18 clip at the charity stripe. The Cobras have shot just 35.9 percent from the floor and 31.6 percent from three in the month of January.

Tanesha Stenson leads the Cobras in nearly every category with 13.9 points, 7.8 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game. Kelley Godbout is contributed 8.3 points and 3.8 rebounds per game, while Hailey Yohn is pitching in 7.3 points per appearance. Junior Kiara Shoats has also been a factor with 7.1 points per game.

The Cobras lead the South Atlantic Conference with nearly seven made three-pointers per game, but they are ranked 10th in the league with a 38.4 percent shooting clip. Coker is one of the worst rebounding teams in the SAC, ranking 10th in rebounding margin with a minus-4.7 mark.

The Lady Railsplitters completely dominated the first meeting between the two teams, owning the paint in a 69-48 win at Tex Turner on December 6. Lincoln Memorial outrebounded the Cobras 57-23 and logged a 42-26 advantage on scoring in the paint. The Lady Railsplitters assisted on 21 of their 30 baskets in the contest. Megan Pittman (Liberty, Ky.) led the way with 12 points and seven rebounds, while Josey Harding (Middletown, Ohio) posted 11 points and eight rebounds in 18 minutes off the bench.

In last season's meeting in Hartsville, the Lady Railsplitters were handed a 69-60 loss by the Cobras. Coker shot 53.3 percent in that contest and drained five of its eight three-point attempts. LMU's Lee and Coker's Stenson went toe-to-toe, with Lee scoring 21 points and grabbing seven rebounds and Stenson scoring 24 points with seven boards.

Saturday's contest kicks off a stretch in which the Lady Railsplitters will be on the road for six of their last nine regular-season games.

Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. in Hartsville, S.C. Live stats and a video broadcast will be available through www.CokerCobras.com, while fans can listen along with Voice of the Railsplitters Rusty Peace at WLMU 91.3 the Gap.
