NEWBERRY, S.C. -- The Lady Railsplitters (6-4, 3-2 SAC) aim to avenge a season-ending loss and snap an 11-game losing streak in Newberry, S.C. on Saturday at 2 p.m. when they square off against the Newberry Wolves (5-5, 4-1 SAC) in South Atlantic Conference women's hoops action at Eleazer Arena.
Â
Lincoln Memorial is 6-16 all-time against Newberry, but five of those six wins have come within the friendly confines of Tex Turner Arena. The Lady Railsplitters are just 1-11 all-time on Newberry's home court with 11-straight losses since knocking off the Wolves 99-52 way back in 1993.Â
Â
The Wolves beat the Lady Railsplitters twice at Eleazer Arena last season, including a 66-57 victory in the quarterfinals of the 2015 South Atlantic Conference Championship. Lincoln Memorial led that contest 16-15 with 4:48 left in the first half, but Newberry closed the half on an 11-6 run and then pulled away early in the second half.
Megan Pittman (Liberty, Ky.) was the lone Lady Railsplitter with more than eight points in that contest, as she put up 18 points and eight rebounds.
Â
The Lady Railsplitters suffered a similar fate in last year's regular season meeting at Newberry. After pulling ahead 22-13 by the 12:20 mark in the first half, Lincoln Memorial went cold and fell into a 42-35 hole by the game's midway point. The Lady Railsplitters stayed within striking distance in the second half, but weren't able to overcome the deficit in an 82-72 loss.
Shea Coker (Knoxville, Tenn.) led the Lady Railsplitters with 16 points, while
Ross Mathis (Greer, S.C.) had 10 points and four assists.
Â
The Lady Railsplitters will be looking to get back on track after dropping a 78-67 decision to Wingate on Wednesday night. Lincoln Memorial couldn't buy a bucket in the opening quarter, going just 1-for-10 from the field through the first 10 minutes of action to slip into a 16-6 hole. The Lady Railsplitters whittled Wingate's lead down to as little as three points in the second period, but ultimately couldn't get over the hump.
Â
Despite finding herself on the bench for much of the first half, Pittman tallied her fifth double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
Britney Guy (Locust Grove, Ga.) was the only other Lady Railsplitter in double figures with 11 points and four assists.
Â
Newberry - the defending SAC tournament champions - enters Saturday's contest sporting a 5-5 overall record with a 4-1 mark in South Atlantic Conference play. The Wolves' only league loss came at the hands of SAC-leading and No. 17 nationally-ranked Anderson, while Newberry has taken care of business against Queens, Carson-Newman, Wingate and most recently Mars Hill. The Wolves find themselves near the top of the SAC standings despite playing seven of their first 10 games on the road.
Â
Unlike their male counterparts, Newberry's women's team is a relatively slow-paced offensive unit that averages the second-fewest shot attempts per game in the league with just 56.4. More than a quarter of those attempts come from behind the three-point stripe, where the Wolves are hitting 6.8 triples per game on a 38.3 percent clip, the 19th-best mark in the nation. All told, Newberry is averaging 66.1 points per game.
Â
Newberry makes its money on the defensive end, though, where they are allowing 60.6 points per game on 38.4 percent shooting. The Wolves also aren't giving up points at the free throw line, as they are committing a league-low 16.6 fouls per game.
Â
Newberry is not a great rebounding team, as the Wolves are ranked 10th in the SAC in boards per game with 36.6. The Lady Railsplitters continue to lead the league in that category despite being outrebounded by Wingate 44-31, as LMU is pulling down 43.6 boards per game.
Â
The Wolves are led by reigning WBCA All-American Samantha Creed, who is putting up 15 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game while shooting 57.1 percent from three-point territory, which ranks third individually in the nation. Meg Essex is averaging 14.8 points and a team-high 6.0 rebounds per game while also ranking 24th in the nation with 19 blocked shots. Nicola Handreck is a triple-double waiting to happen with per-game averages of 12.4 points, 5.2 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game.
Â
The Lady Railsplitters are 4-1 on the road this season and have won four consecutive road contests since falling at Lander 58-56 in the season opener.
