Lady Railsplitters try to match longest winning streak in eight seasons, host Coker on Saturday

HARROGATE, Tenn. -- Trying to secure the program's first five-game winning streak in eight seasons, the Lady Railsplitters (4-2, 2-0 SAC) host the Coker Cobras in South Atlantic Conference women's hoops action on Saturday at 2 p.m. inside of Tex Turner Arena.

Lincoln Memorial is also aiming for its second 3-0 start in SAC play, which was first accomplished by the 2013-14 team that beat Mars Hill, Queens and Anderson before eventually notching the program's highest-ever league finish (3rd place).

The Lady Railsplitters captured their fourth-consecutive win and, at least for the time being, moved atop the early SAC standings with a gritty 69-66 win at Lenoir-Rhyne on Wednesday evening. The Bears had won six straight games against Lincoln Memorial prior to Wednesday night and held a seven-point lead early in the second quarter, but the Lady Railsplitters rallied to take a 33-30 lead into the halftime break. The game swung back and forth in the second half, but senior guard Britney Guy (Locust Grove, Ga.) was the difference, scoring 18 of her career-high 22 points in the last 20 minutes to pace the victory. LMU took control once and for all with a 9-1 run late in the fourth quarter, which was paced by Guy's five points.

The Lady Railsplitters have not won five straight games since the 2006-07 team accomplished that feat from November 21-December 9, but none of those five wins came against SAC opponents. In fact, four of those five wins came at the expense of NAIA teams.

After dropping the first two games of the season in heartbreaking fashion, due in large part to fourth-quarter breakdowns, the Lady Railsplitters have looked nearly unbeatable in the fourth quarter. Head coach Krystal Evans indicated that the pain of those first two losses inspired a resolve within her team to not feel that hurt again and to not allow a game to slip away in the final minutes, and the stats back up that assertion. During the Lady Railsplitters' four-game winning streak, they are outscoring their opponents 97-69 in the fourth quarter. Along with that, Lincoln Memorial is allowing just 36.8 percent shooting and accumulating a plus 13.3 advantage on the glass.

Coker will be ending a 10-day layoff when they pay a visit to Tex Turner Arena on Saturday for the first of two regular season meetings. The Cobras, who are off to a 2-4 start, last took the floor on November 24, using a strong first-half effort to hand the Catawba Indians an 80-68 loss in their South Atlantic Conference opener.

Coker is in the midst of its first season under the direction of Olympic Gold Medalist and seven-time WNBA All-Star Shannon Johnson.

Johnson has the Cobras playing at an exceptionally fast pace, as they rank second in the SAC in field goal attempts per game with 62.5 and lead the league in three-point attempts per game with 21.0. Coker is putting up 67.7 points per game on 38.4 percent shooting, but is turnover prone with a league-worst 22.7 turnovers per game.

The Cobras have given up points in bunches this season, ranking last in the SAC in points per game allowed with 76.5, while sitting third from the bottom in field goal percentage defense with a 42.3 percent clip.

College of Charleston transfer and 5-7 guard Jazz Green leads the Cobras with 16.3 points, 10.8 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game. Green has five double-doubles to her credit this season, but is shooting just 39.3 percent from the floor and turning the ball over 4.5 times per game. Terrika Foster is contributing 11.8 points and 7.7 boards per game on 52.7 percent shooting. Kendra Lambert is averaging 10.7 points, 2.0 assists and 2.5 three-pointers per game. Kiara Shoats and Sydney Shull are notching 9.3 and 9.2 points per game, respectively.

The Lady Railsplitters are 1-4 all-time against Coker, as the two teams split last season's regular season series.

Lincoln Memorial won last year's meeting in Harrogate 69-48, holding the Cobras to a 3-for-18 mark from beyond the three-point arc and amassing a 57-23 advantage on the glass. Megan Pittman (Liberty, Ky.) had 12 points and seven rebounds, Josey Harding (Middletown, Ohio) notched 11 points and eight boards, and Kortnay Cox (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) had 10 points, nine rebounds and five assists to lead the Lady Railsplitters.

Despite shooting 49.1 percent from the field, the Lady Railsplitters lost to the Cobras in Hartsville, S.C. last season by a final of 67-62. Shea Coker (Knoxville, Tenn.) led the way for LMU with 17 points on five three-pointers, while Kiara Rawls (Killeen, Texas) notched 16 points. Harding compiled a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds.

The Lady Railsplitters will be looking to improve to 14-3 inside of Tex Turner Arena in the two seasons under Krystal Evans. In two home games this season, Lincoln Memorial is shooting 40.4 percent from the field, holding its opponents to 34.5 percent shooting and forcing 17 turnovers per game.

Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday in Harrogate. Live stat, video and audio links are available via www.LMURailsplitters.com. Fans can also tune into Voice of the Railsplitters Rusty Peace at WLMU 91.3 The Gap.
