JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. -- The Lady Railsplitters (11-6, 8-4 SAC) will vie for their second regular-season sweep of Carson-Newman (13-5, 7-5 SAC) since joining the South Atlantic Conference when they invade Holt Fieldhouse to face the Eagles on Wednesday night at 6 p.m. in Jefferson City, Tenn.
Â
Lincoln Memorial defeated the Eagles 56-54 in the SAC opener back on November 24 at Tex Turner Arena thanks to the late-game heroics of
Jasmine Kelly (Lauderdale Lakes, Fla.), who knocked down the game-winning jumper with 0.8 seconds left in regulation. Kelly's shot was the culmination of a second-half rally that saw the Lady Railsplitters erase a 10-point deficit to beat Carson-Newman, who was undefeated and ranked 20th in the nation at the time. The Lady Railsplitters held the Eagles to 27.4 percent shooting, including a 1-for-11 mark from three-point territory.
Megan Pittman (Liberty, Ky.) had 14 points and 14 rebounds, while
Josey Harding (Middletown, Ohio) produced 10 points and 10 boards to lead the way.
Â
Now the Lady Railsplitters will attempt to take both games of the regular-season series from Carson-Newman for only the second time since joining the South Atlantic Conference before the start of the 2006-07 campaign. Lincoln Memorial last swept the series just two seasons ago, winning 73-68 at Carson-Newman and 80-71 at Tex Turner in 2013-14.
Â
The Lady Railsplitters notched their third straight win and fourth in the last five games on Saturday afternoon by pulling out a 77-70 double overtime win at Coker. Lincoln Memorial surrendered a five-point lead in the final 30 seconds of regulation and gave up another late lead in the first overtime before finally overcoming the Cobras after 50 minutes of action. It marked the Lady Railsplitters' second double overtime game of the season, the other coming in an 88-83 loss to Anderson.
Britney Guy (Locust Grove, Ga.) had 16 points to lead the Lady Railsplitters, exceeding that point total for the third straight game, while Harding produced 15 points and seven rebounds to tally her highest point output since a 16-point outburst at Brevard on December 14.
Â
Like Lincoln Memorial, the Eagles are also playing well heading into Wednesday's game with wins in six of their last eight games, including a 54-51 triumph over No. 11 Anderson last Thursday. However, Carson-Newman will be looking to bounce back from a 77-69 loss at Newberry on Sunday. Junior guard Kailyn Brooks did her part in that loss, scoring a career-high 25 points on 10-of-17 shooting and a 5-of-9 mark from three, but the rest of her team went a combined 15-for-49 from the field and 0-of-16 from deep.
Â
Brooks leads the Eagles with 14.1 points and 3.2 assists per game on a 44.4 percent mark from long range. Senior guard Tatum Burstrom is putting up 13.3 points per game while shooting 41.8 percent from the field, while 5-10 senior forward Taylor Peterson is chipping in 8.8 points and 3.9 rebounds per game on 43 percent shooting. Sophomore forward Katie Stubblefield is shooting 46.1 percent this season, pouring in 7.4 points and grabbing 3.5 rebounds per game.
Â
Brooks was the only player in double figures for Carson-Newman in the first meeting with Lincoln Memorial this season, scoring 10 points on 4-of-13 shooting. Burstrom added nine points, but finished just 1-of-9 from the floor.
Â
The Lady Railsplitters are 15-28 all-time in Jefferson City and have lost 10 of their last 11 games at Holt Fieldhouse, which includes an ugly 79-57 loss last season. In that contest, Lincoln Memorial shot 37 percent and allowed 53.8 percent shooting on the other end of the floor to suffer its most lopsided loss in the series since a 79-54 setback on November 26, 1996.
Â
Carson-Newman has won four straight games at Holt Fieldhouse and is 6-1 overall at home this season. By almost every metric, the Eagles are substantially better at home, where they average 77.6 points per game on 45.3 percent shooting and a 41.1 percent mark from three as opposed to 67.6 points per game on 39 percent shooting and a 31 percent clip from three on the road. The Lady Railsplitters are 7-2 in true road games this season.
Â
Lincoln Memorial should have a significant advantage on the backboards, as Carson-Newman is being outrebounded by an average of 1.3 boards per game in SAC play. The Lady Railsplitters lead the league in rebounding margin with a plus 11.7 disparity. LMU smashed the Eagles on the backboards in this season's first meeting 53-35, which included 22 offensive boards that led to 18 second-chance points.
