Railsplitters try for program's first road win at North Greenville on Wednesday

TIGERVILLE, S.C. -- The Railsplitters (1-0) look to start faster and pick up the program's first-ever road victory on Wednesday night when they take on the North Greenville Crusaders (0-1) at 7:30 p.m. in Tigerville, S.C.

Lincoln Memorial will be returning to the field for the first time in 11 days with hopes of building off of a 12-4 shellacking of the Emmanuel Lions in the 2016 season opener back on February 6. In that contest, the Railsplitters fell behind 3-1 after an Emmanuel goal at the 9:47 mark of the second quarter, but scored 11 unanswered goals to build an 11-3 lead by the six-minute mark of the fourth quarter.

Adam Golia (Victoria, British Columbia) poured in a program-record six goals, while Billy Kopsky (Smithtown, N.Y.) tallied two goals and two assists. Justin Stewart (Copiague, N.Y.) and Kyle Arcuri (Patchogue, N.Y.) added a goal and two assists apiece.

The Railsplitters weren't originally scheduled to have an 11-day layoff worked into the schedule, but last Saturday's game against 14th-ranked Mercy was canceled due to frigid temperatures and significant precipitation. But head coach Ryan Kuhn and his staff used that nearly two-week hiatus to help his team heal and get prepared for the challenges ahead.

"The break allowed us to work a couple more off days into the schedule," Kuhn said. "We've had some guys that have been sick and nicked up a little bit, so we were able to get those guys back in a good spot from a health standpoint. We were also able to focus on this next part of our schedule. We are going to have our hands full with three really good teams over the next two weeks and it's allowed us to do more from a game planning standpoint to get our guys mentally ready for that."

Finding a way to start faster is also an area of focus for the Railsplitters, as Lincoln Memorial was held scoreless in the first quarter against Emmanuel and tallied just three first-half goals. That issue isn't new either, as the first quarter was the Railsplitters' lowest scoring frame of the 2015 campaign. Last season, Lincoln Memorial accounted for 26 first-quarter goals as compared to 33 in the second, 34 in the third and 28 in the fourth.

"The biggest thing for us over the last week and a half was making sure that our guys play at a faster pace and that we started practice at a faster pace," Kuhn said. "One of the big Achilles heels for us has been that we are slower starters. In order for us to be successful, we have to start quicker."

North Greenville is looking to rebound from a 10-5 loss at Florida Tech in the season opener last Saturday. In that contest, the Crusaders fell behind 7-0 before finally getting on the board at the 9:51 mark of the second period. The deficit crested at 10-2 late in the third quarter, but the Crusaders tallied the last three games of the match to trim the final margin.

The Crusaders are led by junior midfielder and Knoxville, Tenn. native Drew Wassenaar, who scored two goals on six shot attempts against Florida Tech. He led North Greenville in points last season by a significant sum, piling up 30 goals and 10 assists to go along with 26 ground balls. Chris Carpenter, Sean Lemay and Andrew Loach are responsible for the other three goals for the Crusaders. Twenty of North Greenville's 29 players are freshmen.

"North Greenville is a very athletic team," Kuhn said. "They have some really good players in the midfield and they brought in some good players on defense that get out and pressure you all over the field."

Freshman goalkeeper Matthew Sandoval is expected to be in net for the Crusaders. He played all 60 minutes against Florida Tech, allowing 10 goals with 11 saves over 60 minutes of action.

The Railsplitters defeated the Crusaders 13-8 in last season's meeting at the LMU Lacrosse Complex. Lincoln Memorial led that contest 12-4 early in the fourth quarter before letting off the gas and coming away with the five-goal victory. Golia put up four goals and an assist, while Dylan Neisler (Detroit, Mich.) racked up two goals and three assists. Lincoln Memorial limited Wassenaar to just a goal and an assist on five shot attempts.

Lincoln Memorial is aiming for another signature victory on Wednesday night, as the Railsplitters will try to pick up the first road win in program history. Lincoln Memorial went 4-4 at home during its inaugural season, but went 0-6 on the road, falling by a single goal at Wingate and Brevard.

"One of the things that plagued us last year is that we couldn't win on the road," Kuhn said. "In order for us to be successful as a program, and this rings true for any program, we have to be able to win on the road and play well on the road. And that's something we've really stressed for the last week."

The Railsplitters and Crusaders are scheduled to get underway at 7:30 p.m. in Tigerville, S.C. Live stats are available at www.LMURailsplitters.com.
