Lady Railsplitters battle Royals in Charlotte on Saturday

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Following one of the most dramatic wins in recent memory, the Lady Railsplitters (15-9, 12-7 SAC) look to avoid a letdown and tighten their grip on a top-four seed when they invade the Levine Center to face the sputtering Queens Royals (4-20, 2-17 SAC) in South Atlantic Conference action at 2 p.m. on Saturday in Charlotte, N.C.

Lincoln Memorial entered into a four-way logjam for second place in the SAC standings on Wednesday night by capturing a miraculous 67-66 win over the Mars Hill Lions. After trailing by as many as nine points, LMU rallied and grabbed a 61-56 lead with 3:44 left in regulation. However, Mars Hill bounced back and assumed a 66-64 advantage on a clutch bucket by Paige Chavis with four seconds left. With no timeouts left, the Lady Railsplitters quickly in-bounded the ball and raced down court. Though the pass was initially deflected near midcourt, Britney Guy (Locust Grove, Ga.) recovered the ball and knocked down a desperation 35-footer as time expired to give the Lady Railsplitters the stunning victory.

The win helped the Lady Railsplitters remain in the race to earn a top-four seed for the upcoming South Atlantic Conference Championship, which would give Lincoln Memorial the opportunity to host its quarterfinal round game for only the second time since joining the league prior to the 2008-09 campaign. With three games left in the regular season, the Lady Railsplitters are tied with Wingate, Mars Hill and Newberry for second place in the standings, while Catawba is a game back of that quartet at 11-8. Anderson has already clinched the SAC regular season title with a 16-3 conference record.

While the stakes are high for the Lady Railsplitters, Queens is only playing for pride by this point in the season, as the Royals are 2-17 in SAC play with just two wins on their resume since the middle of November, both of which came at the expense of the last-place Brevard Tornados. The Royals topped the Tornados 62-60 on February 6, but have since lost to Wingate (56-35), Mars Hill (72-58) and Catawba (73-58) by double digits.

Queens is shaky in almost every area. The Royals rank last in the South Atlantic Conference in points per game (53) and field goals made per game (19.9) while ranking 10th in field-goal percentage with a 37.9 percent clip. Defensively, the Royals allow over 68 points per game on 44 percent shooting and a SAC-worst 36.9 percent mark from three-point range. Queens is also among the worst in the SAC in rebounding, grabbing a league-low 31 rebounds per game.

The Royals are led by Carmen Richardson and McKell Oliverio. Richardson is averaging 12.1 points, 5.8 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game on 34.3 percent shooting, while Oliverio is contributing 11.6 points and 4.2 rebounds per game with a 40.2 percent mark from three-point range. Erin Brundage is tallying 7.3 points and 2.4 rebounds per game, while Maggie Stewart is good for 6.4 points and 5.1 rebounds per appearance.

Despite allowing the Royals to shoot a season-high 55.6 percent from the floor, the Lady Railsplitters defeated Queens 80-66 in the first meeting this season at Tex Turner Arena back on January 9. Ross Mathis (Greer, S.C.) led the Lady Railsplitters with 11 points, while Kiara Rawls (Killeen, Texas) produced 10 points on 4-for-6 shooting. Fifteen different players scored for Lincoln Memorial in that contest. Four hit double figures for the Royals, led by Oliverio's game-high 17 points.

The Lady Railsplitters are 9-2 all-time against Queens with a current eight-game winning streak in the series. Lincoln Memorial won last season's meeting in Charlotte 52-41 in an ugly game that saw neither team shoot above 31 percent. Stephanie Smith (La Vergne, Tenn.) was the lone bright spot for either team, scoring 19 points and grabbing 12 rebounds in 23 minutes of action.

Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Levine Center in Charlotte, N.C. Live stats, video and audio links are all available at www.LMURailsplitters.com.
