Last Time Out
Â
SAC frontrunners Lenoir-Rhyne opened on a 12-2 run to hand the Railsplitters a 15-7 loss last Saturday in Hickory, North Carolina. Carson Sterling, who scored a match-high six goals, tallied three times in the first six minutes of the match to power a 3-0 opening run for the Bears. Lenoir-Rhyne eventually opened up an 8-1 lead before
Kyle Fleck (Toledo, Ohio) stopped the bleeding with a goal at the 9:34 mark of the second quarter. However, the Railsplitters wouldn't score again until the 13:22 mark of the fourth quarter, when Lenoir-Rhyne had already established a 12-2 cushion.
Kyle Arcuri (Patchogue, N.Y.) and
Billy Kopsky (Smithtown, N.Y.) scored two goals apiece to lead the Railsplitters.
Â
Win and You're (Most Likely) In
Â
A win would all but assure Lincoln Memorial a spot in the six-team SAC Championship field. There are multiple scenarios that exist, though, with so many teams hovering around the three-win mark. LMU could win and still miss out on postseason play, but that would require Catawba to snap Lenoir-Rhyne's eight-match winning streak and Tusculum to go on the road and end Wingate's six-match winning streak. If Catawba and Wingate both lose and Lincoln Memorial wins, the Railsplitters will be the four-seed and host their quarterfinal round match, it was determined by a coin flip to break that potential five-way tie for fourth place.
Â
Winning the Turnover Battle
Â
The Railsplitters have done an outstanding job this season of limiting their turnovers while forcing other teams into numerous miscues. Lincoln Memorial is committing the 16th-fewest turnovers per game in the country with 15. On the other end of the field, the Railsplitters are ranked second in the SAC in caused turnovers per game with 7.91. Fleck and 2015 All-SAC honorable mention pick
Ryan Benck (Hauppauge, N.Y.) are leading the team in that category with 10 caused turnovers apiece, while
Justin Stewart (Copiague, N.Y.) has eight.
Â
Senior Day
Â
In coordination with the final regular-season match, Lincoln Memorial will honor its two seniors,
Justin Stewart and
Jordan DeAngelis (Morristown, Tenn.), prior to Saturday's match. DeAngelis has been forced to sit out the entire 2016 season due to injury, but the Morristown, Tennessee native made six appearances last season, registering one shot attempt while winning a face-off. Stewart, meanwhile, has accounted for 41 points on 22 goals and 19 assists in his two seasons in the Blue and Gray. The Copiague, New York native has racked up 106 shot attempts and 40 groundball recoveries over the course of 23 appearances.
Â
Last Meeting with Coker
Â
The Cobras handed the Railsplitters their most lopsided loss last season by capturing an 18-9 win in Hartsville, South Carolina on March 7. Coker piled up seven goals in the first quarter, carried an 11-5 lead into the break and continued to pull away in the second half. The Railsplitters outshot the Cobras 38-37, but Coker landed 29 of its shots on goal as compared to 21 shots on goal for Lincoln Memorial. Stewart had two goals in that contest, while
Adam Golia (Victoria, British Columbia) produced a goal and an assist. Goalkeeper
Joe Medel (Virginia Beach, Va.) had far and away the worst outing of his career, as he allowed seven first-quarter goals before being pulled for the final 45 minutes.
Â
Cobras Reeling
Â
Coker enters Saturday's regular-season finale in the same boat as the Railsplitters, needing a win to assure its spot in the SAC Championship field. The Cobras have lost three of their last four matches, suffering a 16-10 loss at Mars Hill, a 16-6 loss to Belmont Abbey and most recently a 16-5 loss to Queens. In the midst of that stretch, Coker did knock off Tusculum 11-10 in overtime. The Cobras have to feel fortunate to be in this spot, though, as they opened the season with six straight losses before notching their first win on March 12.
Â
A Look at the Numbers
Â
Coker is neither a great offensive or defensive team. The Cobras are ranked eighth in the South Atlantic Conference and 46th in the country in scoring with 9.21 goals per match. On the other end, Coker is dead last in the SAC and 53rd in the nation in scoring defense, allowing 13.64 goals per match. Despite leading the SAC and ranking 14th in the country in clear percentage with a gaudy 87.7 percent mark, the Cobras' offense has been unable produce due to a shabby face-off winning percentage (40.1 percent). The Cobras are also the worst man-down defense in the nation, allowing opposing teams to score on 58.1 percent of its man-down chances.
Â
Players to Watch
Â
The Cobras' offense as a whole lacks bite, but seniors Mike Martiello and Shane Wilson are both among the top five in the SAC in points with 60 and 46, respectively. Martiello has put up 28 goals and 32 assists, ranking second in the SAC in that department, while Wilson leads the conference in goals with 43 to go along with three assists. Rylee Marsh (14 goals, 8 assists) and Josh Smith (13 goals, 9 assists) are tied for third on the team in total points with 22, while Brooks Long (11 goals, 4 assists) has 15. Juniors Anthony Malik and Adam Messel have split duties at goalkeeper. Malik has played the bulk of the minutes, though, accumulating a 14.44 goals against average and a 39.1 save percentage in nine starts. Messel, meanwhile, has a 12.22 goals against average and a 43.4 save percentage in four starts.
