Railsplitters try for third straight SAC win Saturday against Mars Hill

HARROGATE, Tenn. -- Winners of two straight South Atlantic Conference matches, the Railsplitters (6-3, 2-3 SAC) will try to make it three in a row when they host the Mars Hill Lions (2-8, 2-4 SAC) for an NCAA Division II men's lacrosse match at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Last Time Out

Lincoln Memorial opened on a 7-0 run and never led by less than five goals the rest of the way in a wire-to-wire 12-6 win over the Brevard Tornados last Sunday in Harrogate. The Railsplitters built a 4-0 lead in the first quarter and extended their cushion to 7-0 on a goal by Nick Borriello (Mytle Beach, S.C.) at the 5:56 mark of the second quarter. The Tornados would make it a tad bit interesting early in the fourth quarter when Kyle Hunziker scored to close the gap to 10-5. However, the Railsplitters tallied two goals 15 seconds apart to seal the win. Adam Golia (Victoria, British Columbia) led the way with five goals and an assist, while Billy Kopsky (Smithtown, N.Y.) had two goals and two assists and Kyle Arcuri (Patchogue, N.Y.) had a goal and three helpers.

Back-to-Back SAC Wins

After losing the program's first 12 South Atlantic Conference matches since the 2015 debut, the Railsplitters have now won two straight league tilts after beating Tusculum last week and Brevard on Sunday. With three SAC contests remaining, Lincoln Memorial is in prime position to earn a bid to the 2016 SAC Championship, as the Railsplitters are tied for fourth place with a 2-3 league mark. The top six teams in the final standings advance to postseason play and the SAC tournament.

Golia Joins the 30-Goal Club

With five goals against Brevard, Golia became the first player in program history to score 30 goals in a single season, driving his total to 32. That ranks third in the SAC, as only Coker's Shane Wilson (38) and Queens' Garrett Sadler (35) have more goals than Golia. The Victoria, British Columbia native and sophomore attacker has scored at least four goals in five of his nine appearances this season, headlined by six-goal outbursts against both Emmanuel and Notre Dame de Namur.

Man-Up Struggles

The Railsplitters are ranked third in the SAC in goals per game with 12.0 and they have accomplished that despite some inconsistencies in the man-up offense. Lincoln Memorial enters Saturday's match ranked seventh in the SAC and 50th in the nation by cashing in on just 24.5 percent of its man-up chances. The Railsplitters failed to score on all six of their man-up opportunities against Brevard while going 0 for 1 in that department against Tusculum. LMU hasn't scored a man-up goal since the fourth quarter of the Georgian Court match on March 24.

Last Meeting Against Mars Hill

The Railsplitters kept it close early, but the Lions steadily pulled away to capture a 16-7 win last season in Mars Hill, North Carolina. Lincoln Memorial was within striking distance after Ryan Young's (Mukwonago, Wis.) goal cut the deficit to 3-2 early in the second quarter. However, the Lions ripped off a 4-0 run that didn't end until the midway point of the third quarter. The Railsplitters were unable to recover from that, while Mars Hill tacked on six more goals in the fourth to complete the wire-to-wire win. Kopsky and Young led LMU with two goals apiece.

Lions Heating Up

It might be too little, too late, but Mars Hill is gaining some traction in the final month of the season. After beginning the season with eight consecutive losses, four of which were decided by four goals or less, the Lions have now won back-to-back matches with a 16-10 win over Coker and an 8-6 triumph over Brevard. Don't let Mars Hill's ugly record fool you - the Lions have competed hard this season. They suffered an overtime loss to Wingate and lost 11-5 at nationally-ranked Queens.

Lions Lacking Offensive Punch

Mars Hill has unquestionably been the worst offensive team in the South Atlantic Conference this season, ranking last in the league in scoring (7.6 goals per game), shots per game (25.1) and shots on goal percentage (59 percent). The Lions are also ranked second-to-last in clear percentage with a 79.7  percent mark. The Lions have scored double figure goals only one time this season while being held to six goals or fewer on five occasions.

Players to Watch

Three players have produced at least 20 points for the Lions. Junior Nathan Stewart leads that trio with 18 goals, 11 assists, 47 groundballs and 45 shots. Senior A.J. Seip has accounted for a team-leading 19 goals with three assists, but has also turned the ball over 31 times this season. Freshman Josh Bryers has five goals and 16 assists with 15 groundball recoveries. Dima Ferriera (10 goals, 6 assists) and Austin Bouchard (7 goals, 3 assists) are also factors in the Mars Hill attack. Sophomore goalkeeper Ryan Kearney has started all 10 matches for the Lions, recording a 10.83 goals against average with a 52.4 save percentage.
