Railsplitters take on Tornados in crucial SAC tilt Saturday

BREVARD, N.C. – The Railsplitters (5-5, 1-3 SAC) aim to rebound from Wednesday's devastating loss to Tusculum on Saturday when they pay the Brevard Tornados (2-8, 0-4 SAC) a visit for a South Atlantic Conference showdown beginning at 1 p.m. Lincoln Memorial is coming off of a heartbreaking 13-12 overtime loss against the Pioneers, while Brevard is looking to snap a seven-game losing streak dating back to February 18.

Quick Hits:

-The Railsplitters trailed Tusculum 4-1 at the end of the first quarter, but used an 8-1 run that bled into the third quarter to take a commanding 9-5 lead. The Pioneers responded with a 6-0 flurry to take an 11-9 lead into the fourth quarter. Adam Golia scored the game-tying goal with 4:48 left and nearly put Lincoln Memorial back in the lead with a shot that glanced off the post with 2:36 left, but that was the best chance for either team down the stretch. With 1:10 left in the first overtime, Liam Macdonald recovered a ball amidst a scramble in front of LMU's goal and found Dallas Wade, who canned the game-winning goal.

-Wednesday's loss was Lincoln Memorial's third this season by two goals or less. The Railsplitters also suffered a 13-12 loss at Catawba in the SAC opener after dropping a 9-7 decision to Florida Southern. Since the program's inaugural season, Lincoln Memorial is 3-8 in matches decided by two goals or less.

-Kyle Arcuri paced the Railsplitters with three goals and seven groundball recoveries in the loss to Tusculum. The sophomore from Patchogue, New York has compiled 34 points this season on 22 goals and 12 assists, ranking sixth in the SAC in both goals and assists. He is also 13th in the league with 32 groundball pickups.

-Billy Kopsky tallied two goals and two assists for the second consecutive match to drive his season point total to 20. The Smithtown, New York native's four assists in SAC play rank eighth in the conference.

-The Railsplitters had their best performance of the season at the face-off x against Tusculum, winning a season-high 20 face-offs on 29 attempts. That was just the third time that LMU has won more than 50 percent of the face-offs in a match, as they also accomplished that feat against Catawba (18-for-28) and Roberts Wesleyan (13-for-25). However, the Railsplitters committed 22 turnovers in the contest compared to only 10 for Tusculum.

-With four matches remaining in the regular-season schedule, the Railsplitters are tied for sixth place in the SAC standings. Lincoln Memorial needs to finish sixth or better to qualify for the SAC Championship for the first time in program history, and has a good opportunity with Coker (3-6), Mars Hill (2-5) and Brevard (2-8) left on the schedule.

-Senior goalie Joe Medel has been stellar in his last two appearances, making 16 saves with a 76.2 save percentage against Queens before posting 17 saves on a 56.7 save percentage against Tusculum. The Virginia Beach, Virginia native is third in the SAC in total saves with 112, third in save percentage with a 54.4 percent clip and fifth in goals against average with 9.96.

-Adam Golia needs just six points to break his own single-season program record for points, as the Victoria, British Columbia product is ranked fourth in the SAC with 36 points. With six more goals, he would also break the program's single-season record for goals of 33.

Notes on the Tornados:

-Brevard is seeking its first win since topping Emmanuel 22-13 on February 11, but has been competitive during its seven-game losing streak. The Tornados suffered a 9-8 loss to Pfeiffer, took Tusculum to overtime in a 12-11 loss and fell 5-3 to Coker.

-The Tornados head into Saturday's SAC match against the Railsplitters after losing 11-7 last Saturday to Huntingdon, who used a 7-0 run during the second and third quarters to power its win at the Brevard Turf Field. Brevard was outshot 43-19 in that contest and went 6-for-22 on face-offs.

-Brevard is led by the trio of Kyle Hunziker, Mathew Dropuljic and Jackson McKaig. Hunziker has a team-leading 30 points and 13 assists to go along with 17 goals, while Dropuljic and McKaig have compiled 19 goals apiece with 27 and 26 points, respectively. Senior Ryan Taylor is the only other Brevard player with more than 15 points this season with 13 goals and six assists.

-The Tornados have fired off the second-fewest shots in the league with 279, but have converted 35.8 percent of those attempts into goals. That number is currently third in the nation behind only Saint Leo (41.8) and Pace (40.9).

-Brevard is ranked 46th out of 58 teams nationally in scoring defense by allowing 12 goals per game. For the season, the Tornados have been outshot 410-279, but 200 of Brevard's 279 shot attempts have landed on goal (71.7 percent).

-Freshman Chris Stallings has started eight of the team's 10 matches in goal, compiling a 12.48 goals against average, 98 saves and a 49.7 save percentage over that span. He has made at least 12 stops in four consecutive matches and recorded a career-high 18 saves against Young Harris on February 18.

Series History:

-Lincoln Memorial is 1-1 all-time against Brevard, as the Tornados captured a 5-4 overtime win in Brevard in 2015 before the Railsplitters returned the favor with a 12-6 win in Harrogate in 2016.

-In last season's win at the LMU Soccer Complex, Lincoln Memorial raced out to a 7-0 lead before the Tornados got on the board with 4:24 left in the second quarter. The Railsplitters never led by less than five after that. Golia powered LMU with five goals and one assist, Kopsky had two goals and two assists and Arcuri produced a goal and three assists.
