HARROGATE, Tenn. – Thanks to a host of precipitation in the Tri-State area over the weekend, the Lincoln Memorial University women's soccer program has pushed back its rematch with Carson-Newman to this Tuesday, March 30
th at the LMU Soccer Complex in Harrogate. The postponed matchup was initially scheduled for Sunday evening in Johnson City, Tenn., but has now been moved back to its original location for the Lady Railsplitters' first home contest of the 2021 campaign.
First touch against the Eagles will occur at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday in LMU's penultimate outing of the season, as the finale will then take place two days later against Tusculum, again on the Lady Railsplitters' (3-0-1) home field. Head Coach
Matthew Carr's group was last seen on Friday night downing Mars Hill in the Tar Heel State 1-0 for their second victory in as many games over the Lions on the road.
Accumulating three South Atlantic Conference wins in four attempts thus far on the year, the Lady Railsplitters have put themselves in a favorable position for the conference's postseason tournament, to begin on April 5
th. LMU currently leads "Pod 3" in the league standings by a single point with 10, which ties them for 4
th across the entire league at just two points behind the #1 spot.
The only team that poses a significant threat to the Lady Railsplitters at the moment for the top placement in Pod 3 is their opponent and arch-rival on Tuesday, Carson-Newman. LMU opened up the 2021 campaign in grand fashion back on February 25
th in Jefferson City, using a last-second goal from junior forward
Rachel Taylor to comeback from a 1-0 halftime deficit and squeeze out a 2-1 double-overtime victory in the 110
th minute.
Since that point, the Eagles have been knocking their opponents back in convincing order, shutting out both Mars Hill and Tusculum by a combined 11-0 margin, before most recently getting the better of the Pioneers again last Thursday by a 3-2 clip in overtime.
LMU's only blemish towards their record thus far was in their next appearance after the Carson-Newman rally, forced to end in a tie with Tusculum at 1-1. The Lady Railsplitters will approach the rematch with C-N on Tuesday having reached back-to-back W's over Mars Hill by respective scores of 2-1 and 1-0.
Through the team's first four matches of the season, the tandem of Taylor and
Jessica Cravero have recorded all six of the blue and gray's goals with three apiece. Cravero was responsible for the game-winner in the team's second straight win over MHU two days ago, powering in her 40
th career goal with 12 minutes remaining to put her in sole possession of 3
rd place all-time in program history in most goals scored.
Finishing out their season with a three-match slate in a seven-day period, the Lady Railsplitters battle two in-state rivals 48 hours apart on their home field with a shot at hosting the first round of the SAC Tournament should their successes continue.
