Harrogate, TN -- It's all come down to this. All of the hard work, late nights, and grueling meets have lead to the same destination: the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Following a tremendous regular season that culminated into a South Atlantic Conference Outdoor Heptathlon Championship, Lincoln Memorial track and field standout
Sterling Webb will now lay it all on the line in the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships as she competes for a national championship. Webb, the
indoor Regional Field Athlete of the Year also competed for a national championship during the outdoor circuit.
"The hay's in the barn," said track and field assistant coach Jeff Kavalunas. "For us, it's 'let's get there and see if we can hang on.' We try to compete as hard as we can all season long in order to get here. Sterling has put in a lot of work to get here. We've all worked very hard all season long."
"For Sterling, or anyone else, the goal is to get to the 'big meet', whether its the conference championship or otherwise, that's what we strive for all season long," said Director of Track and Field
Rochelle Black. "In Sterling's case, it's the national championship. She did that during the indoor season as well, which was great. It wasn't the type of finish she wanted, but it was a great introduction to the level of competition. That was something that she hadn't been exposed to at the time. Now, she will go to the next meet with a better understanding. Being around athletes that she's seen before could definitely help with composure. To put it into perspective, there are athletes that competed for championships in the indoor events and didn't make it to the outdoor events. It's extremely competitive. It's two different sports. Ultimately, it's still seven events. You have to remain focused on the task at hand. She's got to be able to flip that switch. She has to be a hurdler, then a long jumper, and so on, individually re-focusing for each event individually. She got here on hard work and that's what we expect at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships."
The NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships will begin Thursday at CSU-Pueblo.
