HARROGATE, Tenn. -- As the end of the year approaches, the Lincoln Memorial University athletics department is counting down the top 20 moments of 2015. Softball's
Samantha Smith (Knoxville, Tenn.) nabs the No. 2 spot in the countdown with a nearly perfect performance in the South Atlantic Conference tournament.
Â
For all that it lacked in longevity, the Lincoln Memorial-Anderson rivalry was filled with drama well before the seventh-seeded Lady Railsplitters and second-seeded Trojans opened up the 2015 SAC Championship on April 23 in Hartsville, S.C.
Â
On paper, the game set up to be a slugfest, as the Trojans entered that contest as the 28th-ranked offense in the country, but Smith completely neutralized that high-octane attack by tossing the Lady Railsplitters' first no-hitter since 2011.
Â
Smith put up back-to-back scoreless innings before the LMU offense exploded in the top of the third behind a solo home run from
Emilee Solomon and a grand slam from
Megan Tice.
Â
The Lady Railsplitters brought the run-rule into effect with two runs in the top of the fourth and another tally in the top of the fifth, and then Smith slammed the door on the Trojans by striking out the side in the bottom of the fifth.
Â
Smith - who notched the program's first no-hitter since Cierra Mudd blanked Glenville State in March, 2011 - finished with six strikeouts. Two walks and a hit-by-pitch were the only base runners to reach against Smith, who led the Lady Railsplitters to their first SAC tournament victory since 2013.
Â
The Knoxville, Tenn. native would later earn SAC Championship All-Tournament team honors, as she completed the Lady Railsplitters' run by allowing just three earned runs in 21 innings.
