Notes on the Railsplitters:
Preview with Coach L on the Papa John's Splitter Sound Bites podcast
-Lincoln Memorial fell behind early, but scored twice over a seven-minute stretch midway through the first half to power a 2-1 win over the Young Harris Mountain Lions on Saturday in Young Harris, Ga. The Mountain Lions took the lead less than three minutes into the match, but
Danilo da Silva (Campinas, Brazil) and
Victor Peres (Brasilia, Brazil) took matters into their own hands and guided Lincoln Memorial to the come-from-behind win. Da Silva tied the match off of an assist from Peres in the 15th minute before returning the favor and assisting on Peres' game-winner in the 21st minute. The Railsplitters kept Young Harris scoreless over the final 87 minutes, as freshman goalkeeper
August Ahlin (Stockholm, Sweden) made three second-half saves to preserve the win.
-Da Silva was selected as the AstroTurf SAC Men's Soccer Player of the Week on Monday after leading the Railsplitters to two wins last week. Along with his goal and assist against Young Harris, da Silva netted his first goal of the season in a 3-1 win over Southern Wesleyan last Wednesday. He currently leads the SAC in shot attempts with 20.
-The Railsplitters have the second-most assists in the SAC so far with seven. Peres and da Silva lead the team with two assists apiece, while
George Burne (Carlisle, England),
Henrique Rezek (Sao Jose dos Campos, Brazil) and
Felipe de Sousa (Sao Bernardo do Campo, Brazil) have one assist each.
-Lincoln Memorial will look to build off of last season's success in SAC play, as the Railsplitters finished in third place in the league standing with a 7-3-1 conference mark.
-The Railsplitters are off to a tremendous start, but there is one trend they would like to see go away, as LMU has allowed a number of early goals. Against Young Harris, the 'Splitters served up a third-minute goal to fall into a 1-0 hole. Before that, in the match against Southern Wesleyan, the Railsplitters also fell behind after surrendering a goal in the 24th minute. Against Montevallo in the season opener, Lincoln Memorial allowed a goal in the ninth minute.
Notes on the Tornados:
-The start of the 2016 campaign has been pretty solid for Brevard, who sits at 2-1 after defeating King 5-2 in the season opener, losing at UNC Pembroke 2-0 and most recently beating Ferrum 4-1. In Sunday's win over the Panthers, the Tornados scored in the 39th, 47th (twice) and 55th minutes.
-Aside from the shutout at UNC Pembroke, the Tornados' offense has been productive. Brevard ranks second in the SAC in shots per game with 20.3 while ranking fourth in total goals with ninth. In addition to that, the Tornados are one of three teams in the league with eight assists.
-The Tornados are led offensively by junior midfielder Gabriel Garcia and freshman forward Tyler Nelson, who have two goals apiece. Senior midfielder Camilo Sosa and sophomore forward aren't far off of that pace, as that duo has a goal and an assist apiece. Sophomore defender Alex Gerondidakis leads the team with two assists.
-Senior goalkeeper Heath Turner has started all three matches for the Tornados this season, logging eight saves with a .615 save percentage over 240 minutes of action. Turner made a season-high five saves in the Tornados' win at King.
-Brevard went 4-5-2 in SAC play last season to finish alone in eighth place in the league standings. The Tornados earned a spot in the SAC Championship field, but were handed a 4-0 loss by Carson-Newman in the quarterfinal round.
Series History:
The Railsplitters are 9-2 all-time against Brevard and have not lost to the Tornados since suffering a 2-1 overtime defeat in 2008. Despite the seven-match winning streak in the series, the Tornados have made things interesting of late. The Railsplitters eeked out a 1-0 win at Brevard last season and narrowly edged the Tornados 3-1 in the last meeting at the LMU Soccer Complex in 2014. All time, the Railsplitters are 6-1 against Brevard at home.
