HARROGATE, Tenn. -- As the end of the year approaches, the Lincoln Memorial University athletics department is counting down the top 20 moments of 2015. On the final day of the year, we unveil the No. 1 moment in the countdown: a miracle goal in the final seconds that helped the men's soccer team keep its season alive.
Â
The three-seeded Railsplitters hosted the six-seeded Tusculum Pioneers in the opening round of the 2015 South Atlantic Conference Championship on November 3.
Â
As the higher seed playing on its home turf, Lincoln Memorial was the heavy favorite, but the Pioneers grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 61st minute off of a long free kick.
Â
And that's where the score remained as the match entered the final 30 seconds of regulation. The Railsplitters' hopes looked completely dashed, too, as the Pioneers were awarded a free kick from near midfield with 26 seconds left, but that ball was eventually secured by
Bryson Lehn (Hendersonville, Tenn.), begging one of the most dramatic and timely buildups in program history.
Â
Lehn carried some space up the left sideline and passed it off to
Danilo da Silva (Campinas, Brazil), who drove into the Pioneers' territory. A quick flick to
Pedro Villa (New Braunfels, Texas) gave the Railsplitters an opening as the final seconds dwindled away. Villa rocketed a shot in that was deflected by Tusculum's Jorge Alvarez, but the rebound scooted directly to
Nick Spielman (Melbourne, Fla.), who knocked in the game-tying goal with 1.1 seconds left on the clock, causing an absolute eruption from the nearly 350 LMU faithful in attendance.
Â
The Railsplitters would go on to advance past the Pioneers 5-3 in the decisive penalty kick shootout. Â
